Birthers, Mob Rule, and now an Assassination MOVIE?

Rate: 21 Flag

Recently we've had the "Birther" movement, the "mob rule" healthcare town meetings, and now a guy from Staunton, Virginia has seen fit to film an assassination movie which focuses on the Obama campaign.

The film features four, "down on their luck" individuals that plot to kill Barack Obama during his campaign for POTUS.  Scenes were shot locally, including one in front of the high school my mother graduated from as a teenager.

To the local television website, WSLS.com,  Townsend says he isn’t making the movie just to get attention. “It’s not something I set out to make out of shock value or anything like that,“ he said. “There is a legitimate storyline in this.“

What do you think?

Lynchburg is the home of Liberty University and the late Jerry Falwell (who's shoes are under my bed).

I am heading out to a party, but had to share this with OS.
speechless . . . wordless . . . ?

How does tacky sound?
I've always thought the name "Lynchburg" is all too ironic...
There are two issues here. The making of a movie and the fact that its creation is being broadcast on television news. I find the news coverage to be a symbol of a sick trick, and a the movie I think is an error.
yes and yes whoopdedoo and Alan ~

Spud, agreed. I only heard it because it was on local news there and someone from home linked me. Unbelievable.
Holy crap, just when I think I've seen it all it gets better. Being a Canuck north of the border, who closely follows American politics, I can only marvel at your First Amendment. YouTube brings out the crazies, but at least they're easier to keep track of!
Based on what you said, I won't be watching the video clip...the less attention given to this person the better I think. People are so sick
Yep, Lynchburg sounds about right. Pretty sick.
what Buffy said. I won't click it either. but seriously, wtf?

I hope the secret service are all over this, freedom of speech and all.

hello - yelling "fire" in a theater? what is wrong with people?!
Wasn't there a flick where George Bush was assassinated?
I hope this gets and EP and triggers a lot of discussion. This is the first I've heard of the movie. I usually ignore pop culture, but I won't ignore this. I hope more posts will appear as we learn more about the movie. Lynchburg? Interesting.
If these were kids of color, would there be calls for arrest and jail and life sentences?

I get sick of America, sometimes.
The second worst thing that could happen is tying it to a small town in Virginia. Racism, or "hate-ism" as a learned from Harry Homeless-- is everywhere.

What a horrible commentary on our world---that this piece of filth even exists. No matter what the reason.
I don't have enough energy to scream about this the way I would like to. Perhaps in the morning . . .
Aw man, I used to live 20 minutes from Staunton. There are some great and amazing people there, but we had more than our fair share of, well, these types.
very risky film project in some ways. the secret service seriously/aggressivel;y investigates threats against the president. but, a similar movie was made about the "assassination" of bill gates.
Wasn't there a similar controversy about a movie being made about the assassination of W? I'm quite sure it was talked about, although if I remember correctly, it was about a sitting president whose circumstances were identical but the character's name wasn't actually George W. Bush. In that regard, this movie is certainly more direct and therefore worse. I'm not a fan of censorship, but I do think it's appropriate for the SS to keep a close eye on it. Censorship in the name of securing the President's safety is acceptable to me. As for the dude making this thing--I couldn't tell what his politics were; could anybody else? (It seems obvious to me, but you never know.) I can't believe he said something about the potential for somebody making a "stupid mistake" as a result, clearly referring to somebody shooting/killing Obama. Like that would be as benign as a "stupid mistake."
FYI, the movie on the W assassination was a British production. This piece of crap will get no attention from any media distribution outlet.
Thanks, but emphatic no thanks, Townsend. Violent idiots will always be with us, but I see no reason to encourage them. Just because you have the freedom to say anything as protected by the Constitution doesn't mean it's a good idea. The Secret Service already has a tough job protecting Obama; they don't need idiots to make it harder.
This gives me the creeps. I can feel it being turned into a cult must-see by all those citizens of our own country who believe violence is the way to solve our differences. I want to say "let's just ignore it and it will go away" but you know that's not going to happen. The people who want to see/know about this already do...maybe the best we can do is create some public outrage.
First, I guess in a free society moviemakers have a right to produce something like this film. But secondly, free people have a responsibility not to promote hate or rebellion through their actions.

I am not surprised that this film is being made, but I am concerned that as it was stated in the text of the video… “it could be a model” for someone to follow this storyline and attempt a real assassination on our President.

Mother thanks for sharing this story with us…

Sometimes the First Amendment can backfire. It's the price we pay. Of course this guy is filming this for it's creative content. It couldn't possibly have anything to do with stirring the growing number racist whack jobs out there.
I hate to say it, but these sort of things hold a curiosity for me because I'm one of those who really want to know how the other side thinks. Knowing the way your enemy thinks can often show the way to defeat them.
Thanks for adding your point of view :) I was just really, really surprised to see this out there and especially to find out that it got out on local news.

I agree with everyone who pointed out the writer's comment about "a model". WTF ...
What Buffy said. But thank you for reminding me about those shoes....
I'm going to reserve judgment because I don't think there is enough information to say what the film is about. Yes, there is a group that wants to assassinate the president, but that doesn't really tell me anything more about the film. This isn't the first assassination plot movie, nor will it be the last.
I'm disgusted... and appalled! People are nuts!
Sometimes no words are needed..................
what the hell is happening to my country? (didn't a healthcare "activist" who tried to hijack a town hall meeting just say that recently?)

so I ask again, what the hell is happening to my country that some Americans are coming to believe being violent and behaving like lunatics is perfectly American?
