A Letter to the Superintendent of Schools

Rate: 52 Flag

Dr. Spineless Douchebag,

I would like to take a moment to say how irritated I am with the postponement of the viewing of the President’s speech today.  I find it very odd that we received such an assuring robo-call from you last week, only to be followed up with a blurb on the September News papers that came home with the children on Friday afternoon indicating the new format.   In the 2/3 News, you indicate that you may “shorten” the speech to make it appropriate for 2/3 attention spans on Wednesday morning when you plan to show the address.  Any parent that sees fit to have their child sit through a 60 minute worship service knows that children are perfectly capable of sitting and listening respectfully for an extended period of time when that is the expectation.

As if this “tape delay” wasn’t enough, I’m sure you’re aware, as everyone else I know is, that some of your teachers are out in the community raging on about the speech and have even been heard saying that they refuse to show it.  Now, I’m guessing that won’t happen, but I have to hope that you and your teachers are responsible enough to recognize that children are especially aware of nonverbal cues.  A teacher who sighs and scowls throughout the speech is just as guilty of forcing their political view on my child, as one who refuses to show it and that is unacceptable.  If I can’t trust your staffs’ professionalism on this issue, how can you assure me of their appropriateness on other curriculum issues with which they may have personal objection?

I would also like to know exactly what it is that our students have scheduled at 11:00 am, the day after a holiday, which is impeding them from watching it today … live.  In the blurb I received, the speech is said to be at 12 noon, which is true on the east coast, but not here in Missouri. I also understand that several teachers have come straight to the district office with their objection to the viewing of the President’s speech.  I would like for you to publish the names of those teachers so parents, like myself, can be assured that we will not have our children placed with educators that feel that it’s their duty to indoctrinate or lack appropriate levels of professional control.

In closing and in regard to the “tape delay”, I can only assume that this is a pacifier for the parents/faculty that have expressed their displeasure (a chance for them to watch today and decide if a pro-academic message which they could have read online is in fact sowing seeds of socialism).  I am greatly disappointed and thoroughly dissatisfied with your decisions.  It is no wonder that we have not made adequate progress and been out of compliance with NCLB for the last three years if this is the level of weakness and ineptitude with which we meet our challenges.

Sincerely,

1_Extremely_Irritated_Mother

ugh ... I gotta get the hell out of this corner of the state ...
I think seriously that superintendents are just put there to make parents lives living hell. They don' t care about the kids. They're too high up for that.
Sick Fu*ks all want us to be fascists and fear that exposing innocent children to a message of study and do your homework will lead to independent thought.
it isn't just your corner of the state Anne. even here, in one of the bluest states ever!
The sad thing, Mother, is that there's nutjobs like that in EVERY corner of EVERY state. You can't escape it.
come up here Ann, I think you'd love the politics of Chicago (well, at least the presidential politics)
Wondering if you really communicated this (maybe in a different manner or maybe not) to your school? Waiting to hear the kids stories when they get home from school today. It was our first day so I am not sure what they were planning.
My relocation suggestions are not any more politically viable.
The company is better, though.

(thumbified, but you know what you did)
Spineless D. has a doctorate?
I totally agree Jess ... this guy is just such a weiner ... one of those folks who doesn't seem to stand for anything ...

uh-huh Bob ... the number one rule of republicanism seems to be to first make a villain of anyone who doesn't agree

L&P ... wtf ... I think it's high time we left for Paris.

I know Jen ... it just makes me feel better to think that maybe there's not ...

Julie ~ I think I might find the land of Blago to be quite exciting!!! haha!
mamoore ~ I can't wait to hear from them! and yes, I did send - as is. only the names were changed to protect the guilty.

josephine ... come to Paris with L&P and me! after we are bloated on chocolates and croissant we can take an extended vaca in London.

SY ~ sure does ... I guess ... probably from the University of Wishywashy
I would LOVE to find a state in the South (other than Florida) that isn't quite so RED. When y'all find it, can you let me know?
Oh dear.
I'm so sorry. But my kid doesn't start school until Thursday. It would NEVER have been an issue in Ithaca. We kind of pride ourselves on our devotion to academics. Makes us thought of as "snobs" by some of the other communities, but fuck 'em. Education's too damn important. My sister-in-law is a teacher, and she is keeping her kid out of school today so he CAN see the speech, as her douchebag principal won't let them show it in classes. What the fuck is wrong with people?
I swear. I've been saying to Rob all week. I want to leave this country. Seriously. I want to live somewhere civilized and not terrorized by the ignorant who wallow in their lack of knowledge.
This is obviously a product of the continual partisan rumor mill, designed to chip away at the sitting president. Now the conservative pun-dents are cherry picking the speech, to a ridiculous degree.
I would love permission to tweak your letter to send to our stupidentent.

And while awaiting change here in TX, I would be happy to be tour guide on an extended jaunt thru civilized countries!
Well-said! Do you really want people who are so fanatical as to fear a President's address to school children to be the ones teaching your kids?
Sometimes I feel as if I should move, too, but I don't know where it could be.
These kinds of fake controversies are why home schooling is so attractive to me.
I think, Ann, that it's time to dust off and open that can of "Whoop-Ass" you've been saving up for a special occasion.

And they call themselves "Educators"?????
I spent the weekend amongst Obama haters at the Lake of the Ozarks...
It's mostly racism best I can figure Anne.
Great letter!
I don't live in Missouri, and every now and then, I'm reminded why. Great post.
Let me see here. Only 70% of our students graduate high school, so a message from the President to school age children to study hard and stay in school is looked upon as some political agenda to usurp the minds of our children. So the Presidents address is a bad idea? Who comes up with this crap?! And when did we lose so much respect for the office of the Presidency? Oh that's right. That started eight years ago.
Anyway, I don't get where some SOB who is on the taxpayers dole gets the idea that he can censor the effing President of the United States. That some huge balls and very little brains in my book. How dare anyone who pulls that crap. Talk about anti-American. It doesn't get much worse than that. I agree that most of that sort of sentiment is deep seeded in blatant racism.
So glad you really sent it. Let us know if you get a response!
I hope you kept the salutation when you sent it...now, if you had called him a spineless douche nozzle, that would have been offensive. I should know since I have the copyright of that appellation tattooed on my ass.

srsly, it is all rather spineless, isn't it...and douchey.
seriously considered it. sigh.
Why couldn't the "PC" police have been more active during the first 8 years of this century? I thought it funny to see a news clip on C-Span this morning about when George H.W. Bush addressed school children in 1991. Guess that wasn't controversial.
I must say, I am shocked that our school is showing the speech and telling parents they can opt out. I think Obama only got 3 votes in this area, mine, Mr Fly’s and our son’s, so I was pretty sure the only way our daughter was going to see the speech was if we recorded it for her. But they are showing it! Maybe a tiny ray of hope…
I'm trying with all that's in me to finish reading this. I know it's brilliant. I'm sure of it.

But I cannot......stop......laughing....hysterically at "Dear Spineless Douchebag......"
I love this letter, 1IM. Love it. Sorry about losing it with the intro, but it struck me as funny and so true.

Hope you get a hearty response. We can only guess, if you do, how much s/he'll say it was 'only' about the lesson plans. Duh.

Brava!
You done good, 1_I_M, very, very good . . . a well worded WTF!!!!
Great letter with big balls!
It's not you the rest of your world is filled with crazies.
Thank god for tivo, the internet, you tube, etc - you can still show your kids the wickedness. Besides, by treating it as something scandalous every kid in the nation is gonna wanna see it.
It's red down here in Arkansas, too! Loved this ...absolutely loved this! Get 'em, mom!
"Dr. Spineless Douchebag" and then some...
Amen! What kind of democracy is this supposed to be? Now the lunatic fringe are trying to censor the President!
Give 'em hell, Mom! Great letter!
Ann,
Sorry but not surprised to hear this. A lot of the parents who wouldn't let their children participate saw UFOs over the weekend too. There is a strong positive correlation. Next up is blaming Obama for Halloween tricks.
Magnificent! Our superintendents must be twins.
Wanna join a hot and heated forum that discusses the truth about these big stars?
____Tallmingle.com____ has lots of sports fans there! besides, it's hot models, milfs, sexy chick s and handsome young men and chicks mingle club!!LOL
Squeaky wells get greased in education as the educators oftentimes feel cowed by the loud parents. The silent majority gets short shrift. Even that paragon of virtue, Dick Nixon, knew that one. :) Hang in there Imom, parenting ain't bean bag.
I hope you actually sent that letter, IMom. It was PERFECT. Yeah, you do need to get out of that corner of the state..... xoxo
This is a nice, cleaned up version compared to the e-mail I sent to the Superintendent, Principal and Mayor last night. My son's school was scheduled to see the address up until the moment it was canceled, which was spinelessly spur of the moment.

They picked a bad time as the first PTA meeting of the year was set for yesterday at 6:30 PM along with Open House. My 100% inspired blog of last night on my personal health care woes was an outlet for the anger and rage I felt toward those who supported the move last night. I was heard, OH HOW I WAS HEARD. ("What the hell has that big behemoth of a man so angry?!") That was the look I got. I ended up getting a smattering of applause that then grew into a large amount of applause. Honestly, our Principal was all for showing the speech, the orders came down from Nashville I learned. So today I will find the appropriate person and contact them in our not so great capital.

I feel ya ma, I'm with ya ma, and I'm quite possibly more Irritated than you this time.
Love and Hugs

Thanks to everyone for your comments.
Yes, I did actually send the letter. I do strive to maintain my ladylike dignity, so I chose to address him by his proper name. I'll let you decide if that proper name involved "Douchebag."

I wish I could answer every comment but my internet is down. I am bringing you this comment through the power of Kindle and a mystical union between tin cans and a piece of string. Thanks to each of you for your support.

My oldest daughter has been instructed to go straight to the office and call me if she has not been shown the video by 9 a.m. this morning. When they get home, all of the children will be giving me a report to see if they have seen video in its entirety.

I will be back to comment as soon as the webernet is back and operational. I may or may not have smacked myself a spineless douchebag by that time. I'll let you know how it all turns out.
My childs school refused to show it also. So, instead of having my child do her 'reading' homework and summary last night I had her watch the Presidents speech online and write a summary about it. If she is given a failing score for the homework don't think I wont be on them like stink on shit!
You had me at "Dear Spineless Douchebag."
lol..sounds like you are in the southwest corner to me..
I feel your pain, irritated mother!
I too had to fire off angry emails and had two long conversations with the principal of my older childrens' school, after the school defied Broward County Schools' decision to have the speech aired. My older two did not get to see the speech until they got home (they attend a charter school. The principal says charter schools were given "different advice.") So my 9 year old was able to watch the speech with no harm done, but my middle and high schoolers were barred from seeing it. Worse, I live in Broward County, often called the most Democratic county in America, and which voted for Obama 66 percent to 33 percent.

The politics isn't even the issue, however, it's the outrage that a handful of vapid right wing parents got to make the decision for the entire school. As of last night, the principal was promising me the speech would be shown this week, and "incorporated into the teachers' lesson plans" at their own discretion. We'll see ...

My email to the school is here:

Definitely looking forward to hearing what happens with your school.

cartouche - I heard you had a room available!???
I wonder if the doktorr of education ever spent any time actually teaching or is he all about educational theory. The educational establishment is rotten with these guys and they can't teach but can't wait to demonstrate their POWER. How about firing him and see if it makes a difference. Save the school district some money or use the savings to hire real teachers.
I, like fingerlakeswanderer, have known that I am living in a country that is not civilized but where can you move to? With the Republican/Neoconserative/Fascist influence will probably catch up with you.
We are about to hear an address tonight about health care and the media is ready to broadcast a Republican response that we don't need. We voted these people out but they won't stop their efforts to derail the change we voted for. They receive entirely too much coverage from the media.
Good on you Mother for posting this!
Thanks, Mother! Good letter. We must keep protesting every time the jerks start jerking us and our children around.
