How could you not like this incredibly succinct lede from the Christian Science Monitor: "Public likes public option for healthcare. Joe Lieberman doesn’t."
The Independent from Connecticut isn't particularly interested in polls showing a majority - slim but ever-present - of the American people supporting some sort of public option for health insurance. As I understand it (and I concede there are people far more informed than I am about such things), the iterations of the public option as they now stand, or rather barely stay afloat, having been watered down by various interests, appear to present as an alternative to people who can't otherwise have access to health insurance. That's it. If you've got insurance already and and you like it, you're fine. In fact, as suggested today by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, if you're in a state who doesn't like the idea of a public option, the state can opt out.
However, Lieberman apparently feels that "there's plenty of competition in the private insurance market," as he was quoted last June,in an article written for the online political journal The Moderate Voice. I guess he had a chance over the summer to tell that to those uninsured who'd like to at least get their kids covered but simply can't afford it. Since a majority of Connecticut residents voted for Lieberman, who is so clearly a Republican I don't understand why he doesn't just get it over with and stop sullying the concept of "independent,"I hope Connecticut opts out, or tries to, so we can see how many people regret their votes.
Actually, Connecticut won't get the chance - not will any other state. This version won't pass. At the end of the day, concensus will look an awful lot like appeasement; there won't be anything left for anyone to crow about - unless maybe you're Joe Lieberman, who once again gets the face time he feels he so richly deserves.
