- I'm from the Mohawk Territory of Kahnawake, bordered on the north side by the St. Lawrence River and Tiotia:ke (Montreal). The values of a formal education were not in my sphere of things as a youngster. Some elders questioned why the kids had to attend school when there was so much work to do in the garden. "You can't eat books" was something that made sense to me at the time. Since then, I've developed a thirst for words, which has proved to be somewhat fulfilling, but oh so quenching.
