Know what could be better than live blogging? Live reading. 1
We all love to read everyone's blog posts - they make us laugh, make us cry, sometimes make us shake our fists with anger and rage. All the while we're sitting behind our desks, staring at a monitor. Yeah, reading is some powerful stuff. Listening and watching can be too.
I'm sure plenty of you out there in cyberland have ventured forth from your lairs to catch a live literary reading. It's definitely not as exciting as say, a live performance of a band.
However, if you haven't had the pleasure of catching folks who make their fingers bleed typing for half the day and you happen to be in Chicago, now you've got a chance. No, none of these fantastic readers blog here on OS (except yours truly) - hell, most of them don't even blog. But still, they're all amazing writers, great people, and it's at a great location. So, if you live in Chicago or happen to be visiting the weekend of the 21st, I invite you to drop by for this pretty fantastic event. Not only will you catch local hip writers, but you'll even have a chance to pick up zines we make! If you're curious about what a zine is, I refer you to this link. Here are some details:
Old School Zine Reading Night! Say What!
February 21, 2009
7:00pmto8:00pm
at the fantastic Quimby's Bookstore, located at 1854 North Avenue in Chicago, Illinois.
Join us for a zine reading hosted by Billy Roberts of Loop Distro and Proof I Exist zine and Aaron Cynic of Diatribe zine and formerly of Fall of Autumn Distro.
With featured zinsters:
Andrew Mall: In between time served in grad school, teaching, writing zine reviews for Zine world, and volunteering with the Chicago Independent Radio Project, Andrew Mall consistently poses as an authority on all things hip and cool. While the most recent issue of his zine Living Proof is a year and a half old, he is currently editing the next issue with hopes for a late spring release.
Matt Fagan: Matt Fagan is a zinester and artist from Oregon who now lives in Chicago. He runs Meniscus Enterprises, out of which he publishes his zines and comics. Matt is also the co-owner of a comic book store called Brainstorm.
ReyRey: Rachel does a zine called Stream of Consciousness, now in its third issue.
Liz Mason: Liz Mason manages Quimby’s bookstore, the greatest bookstore ever, publishes a zine called Caboose, and thoroughly enjoys karaoke.
So yeah, if you dig hip kids reading their writing for you out loud, like independent books, and want to meet the man the news monster represents, c'mon by! Hell, you can all meet up and roll out together at Hot Doug's - just make sure you bring me one.
1 - Yes, I recognize that this is nothing more than shameless self promotion. However, if you've read this far, I have a surprise for you. I used to do these every month and plan on starting that tradition again. This means, at some point, I would love to have an OS Chicago reading. If you're interested, message me and let's make something happen!
