Walter Cronkite, 92, famed news man – THE news man passed today. The first anchor man – having the term coined for him due to his “anchoring” of both the democratic and republican conventions for the 1952 election, was also an avid Volvo enthusiast. In addition to his profoundly distinguished career in journalism, a little known fact is that he too was a bit of an automotive philosopher.
Mr. Cronkite along with the late famed Volvo of Long Island dealer, Art Riley, achieved a great deal of success in the endurance racing circuit in a Volvo PV544. The Riley/Cronkite team campaigned and won a great many races at Lime Rock’s Little LeMans in ’57, 58, and (if I recall) ’60/’61. In one instance, Cronkite was the only one in his five car team to actually finish during a division B run – which also placed him in third place overall in the race. Riley and Cronkite also competed in the famed Trans Canadian rally on several occasions.
So, to celebrate the most interesting life of this great journalist, car guy, and icon, I offer up a 21 honk solute!
Happy motoring, Walter! Mind the apexes, and we’ll see you at the finish line! And that’s the way it is…
