Some More Sunday Morning Opera

Rate: 8 Flag

Inspired by Monte Canfield I thought, why not make this a musical Sunday?  In case you didn't know Monte posted on his blog what might be the single most beautiful piece of music, ever.   Check it out.

The two pieces I offer for your listening pleasure are both sung by Maria Callas.  The first is a piece called LaWally.  Some of you might be familiar with it from the Godard movie Diva, sung by Wilhelmina Wiggins Fernandez.  Her rendition is breathtaking, but I still prefer Callas'.

The second piece is from Carmen.  It will get you moving on a Sunday and make you laugh.  Here the theatrical gifts of Callas are plainly evident.  This was recorded in 1962 and watching her I can understand why Aristotle Onassis was so in love with her.  A pity for her that in a few short years she would become the tragic figure in her own love story in that impending triangle. Life imitates art imitates life.

i hate that my stupid speakers are effed up. this is torture. it's all fine when i play stuff on Itunes. took me decades but i finally like opera a whole lot. thanks for sharing. love love lvoe
I love this post. Thank you

I first heard Maria Callas on the 'Philadelphia' movie soundtrack, singing La Mamma Morta. Loved loved loved it.

So, if I were to purchase a Maria Callas cd today, what would you recommend?
I So love Carmen! Maria Callas held her own while the orchestra
did it's thing.
Did you ever see Carmen Jones?
The lyrics to the song M.C. was singing (sung by Dorothy Dandridge)
were:
If you want me
Then I'm taboo
But if you don't
Then I want you
If I want you
I will get you
And when I do
That's the end
of You!

(Alas, that sums up my relationships with women!)
How splendid! How fabulous! I got so excited I got strawberry jam all over my mouse. Thank you! This morning I am worshiping at the feet of Divine Music. Callas did!! have a lovely sense of humor, a great sense of expression and timing! All I knew about her was the sorrowful story when she lost Onassis. She was beautiful and celestial. Alas, what a loss.
Glad you are enjoying the morning music! Thanks for posting the words DakiniDancer. That song sounds exactly like what it means, doesn't it? Wakingupslowly I would first suggest Madame Butterfly as a must have, then, if you have a good library check out some selections there and go with what you love.
Just beautiful. Thank you for these. Music days are always good days.

I think I've hit a new level of OS addiction with this. I'm listening to this here, while listening to Frank McCourt talk about writing over on Wayne Gallant's blog on another window. I feel like I have created my own OS radio station.

rated for beauty.
Her voice is so amazing. Thanks for posting this.
Beautiful, Lovely. Thanks for reminding me.
I love opera, though I really don't know a lot about it, and when I back when I wasn't poor, I used to go the Met. They still offer inexpensive nose-bleed seats but I got spoiled by sitting in the balcony.

Thanks for this. I wasn't at all familiar with "La Wally". It's gorgeous.
Maria Callas singing Carmen! Formidable, fantastic.... great post, thanks!
