The 80s – My Hair, My Music

Rate: 21 Flag

I’d blogged before about my 70s hair style.  With straight blond hair it wound up like Rick Wakeman’s.

                    rick wakeman

But once I was accepted into biz school, I figured I didn’t want to be pegged as the token hippie.  So I switched to:

                    McCallum

And that look has stayed with me to the present, EXCEPT, for one day in the 80s.

I went downtown to get a haircut.  It was a fine summer day.  Too fine though.  My barber had closed shop early to go to some festival.  No problem, or so I thought.  There were a couple of other places nearby so I sauntered into one.  You’ll see from the Ilya Kuryakin pic above, my hair needs little tending to.  So I reckoned that the barber didn’t need much guidance from me.  I may have muttered something like “Nothing special”.

I removed my glasses and she went to work.  Without them I’m not completely blind but the world appears gauzy, filled with ill-defined shapes and colors.  After a while she held up a mirror.  Sans specs, it was hard to tell.  It looked like a mess but I reckoned she was just gauging the desired length.  “Fine” I said.

Then she began removing the apron and handed me my glasses.  I was shocked what the clearer view disclosed.  This!

                    Idol

It turned out that I’d unknowingly entered a New Wave establishment and everyone was getting weird cuts.  That evening my friends had a huge laugh.  The next day it washed out back to something close to normal but how I wish I’d snapped a photo.  Anyway, in honor of Mr. Idol:

And while we’re at it, how about some Clash:

:D beautiful hair! Heard Rebel Yell on the radio the other day. What a good song that was.
Abra: Let's have a Rebel Yell! You should've taken a pic of your Idol hairdo. In the midnight hour she cried, More, More More. More Hair gel, that is!!:)
"You are so beautiful to me....." all three of you!!!!
"You are so beautiful to me....." all three of you!!!!
h-Julie - good song and great video. Idol and his guitarist were great showmen.

Scarlett - how I wish. Now I think too many years have passed to recreate it.

Sheila - Thanks you thank you.
Man. I had such a crush on Ilya Kuriakin. This is too true to the times!
Abra with glasses. That's a new thought!
Love this post and the humor it contains. Still don't know who jules is. :o(
White Wedding is my favorite! Cool pix.
Great hair, and music Abra! love the sneer...
jane – I’ll have to negotiate the release of my old photos. They’re in some boxes somewhere at my ex’s.

zuma – I looked up to Ilya in those days. I gues I was looking for blond role models and the Tab Hunters and Troy Donahues just didn’t do it for me.

Fusun – I’ve had the specs since I was 12. I needed them at 10 but faked my way through classes for a couple of years.

Wren – WW is pretty good too. I like the live concert energy on Rebel Yell.
I knew you would come up with some great 80's music. Wooo. I love all the transformations. Let's transform some more!!
zanelle – After all these years I’ll take the status quo hair over a rival age-related one. Or could the Idol look return?

Margaret – Thanks, but these days rolling comes a bit easier.
I wonder what you had for your White Wedding day..:)
HUGGGGGG
Go Billy Idol hair...rocking for sure! LOL!
Oh, Abra, I can only imagine the look on your face when you put the glasses back on!
Linda - I stuck with the Kuryakin look on the wedding day. Didn't want to steal the bride's thunder.

Michelle - You folks are tempting me. And it IS about time for an Idol revival.
Kate - I had to suppress a sizable overreaction, especially cuz it was in a place where everyone else looked and acted so cool. I felt like everyone would be staring when I walked out but it was in a hip section of town and I blended in.
Awesome is the only appropriate word.
I am sure you were adorable.

All three are faboo on you! It's amazing how different we look (tee hee) with a new style. Am thrashing my head to Billy Idol now, well... I'm thinking about thrashing my head but the arthritis doesn't allow it.
JB – Thanks very much. When I saw myself I was too speechless for any word.

RP – You are too kind. Please note that I didn’t seek out photos worse looking than I was.

L’Heure – You’re entirely right about how a new hair style changes one. I kind of felt different with the Idol do. Had to restrain the sneer.
I used to have several Billy Idol posters on my wall, back in the old 80s when I was a wee lass.
Hilarious. I'm sure your expression when you first saw your hair would also have been a "kodak moment." Luckily for all, I won't be posting shots of my mid-80s Jesus & Mary Chain/Robert Smith frightwig/lightning socket hair (special thanks to French Formula), my one haircut I have truly regretted. My hair has routinely been all buzzed off since the mid 90s.
Oryoki – I guess Mr. Idol was more like a father figure to you.

Various – You’re right that when I saw it, my eyes must have bugged out something frightening. My hair would have stood on end too except it already was.

Please reconsider and grace us with your Jesus & Mary Chain/Robert Smith frightwig/lightning socket hair pic. Dunno if you’ve checked out some of the other 80s posts but there’s no way yours will be an outlier.
Your personal tonsorial journey, Rick Wakeman to Illya Kuryakin to Billy Idol, could almost be taken as a metaphor for America itself. Sadly, that journey has come to a squalid end with the rise of this new style I'm seeing more and more where certain douchebags' hair is gelled up in the middle like a mohawk but it's not a mohawk 'cause all the rest of the hair is still there interfering with it and just looking generally stupid. What is up with that?
Interesting way to look at it nana, society's path disclosed through hair styles. Peace & love (some drugs too), taking care of business and self excess. As for contemporary extreme styles, isn't it just the traditional manifestation of today's yute fashioning themselves in a way designed to perturb their elders? We did the same in the 60s and 70s.
Your cool and then some. Thanks for sharing.

Love Billy Idol! It could have been worse - Flock of Seagulls comes to mind.
Hair -- reminds me of that ol' Ral Donner song -- you don't know what you got until you lose it
Algis – Thanks, though never as cool as the hipsters actually seeking out the new look.

Lucy – Small mercies. Also, the lead singer from Midnight Oil.

Tom – Strangely enough, I didn’t feel that deep sense of longing when the Idol cut got washed away.
Ha! At least you didn't come out with a perm!
Abra sorry it took me so long to get around to a read. First I have to say the The Man From U.N.C.L.E. was must see TV for me so I loved that cut. Having died my afro using Ultrablue which is a bleach and having a tricolor effect in the back, that I wasn't even aware of for months, I know how distressed you were when you realized your hair looked like you had put your finger in a socket. Really fun read this one. rated
