People around me are rejoicing because Mississippi voted against a ballot initiative that stated that life begins at fertilization. The "Personhood" amendment would have made abortion illegal, jeopardized some forms of birth control, and possibly brought legal attention to some miscarriages. It would also have set up a possible Supreme Court decision in the coming years. The amendment would have been legally challenged thus ensuring a trip up the judicial ladder, and that is what the far right has long wanted. With a conservative court, Roe v. Wade is in real jeopardy this time around.
Make no mistake. I am glad that women's rights were upheld in Mississippi. However at the same time, Mississippi voted FOR a constitutional amendment that will require voters to present a government issued ID when voting. Who doesn't typically have a government issued ID? Poor people including minorities.
So no, I am not exactly dancing as Mississippi takes a step backwards in equal rights.
