Well, well, well. It appears that one of the loudest voices opposing healthcare reform in the U.S. used to use the Canadian healthcare system, despite recent opines about how awful said system is.
Yes, that's right, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin crossed the border to Canada to receive healthcare. And it wasn't investigative reporting or loud mouthed doctors that outed her. SHE ADMITTED IT IN A SPEECH!
Not only is she a hypocrite, she's a moron* who can't keep her own secrets.
By the way, the Canadian system is single-payer system, meaning that in exchange for a tax, Canadian citizens get free health care, and they can also purchase supplementary private insurance for elective procedures or other things not covered by the national plan. Some U.S. citizens abuse** their system and cross the border to obtain reduced cost care (and as Palin shows, all while complaining about people who abuse the American system). The current health reform debate isn't even trying to approach single-payer, instead opting to keep private health insurance companies fat and rich*** and avoiding additional taxes.
Americans can't have the public option, why? Oh, that's right, because it would get us closer to having the Canadian system...which actually turns out to be not so bad. Right, Sarah?
*I don't like to resort to name calling, but in this case I feel it is fully supported by the facts
**I only call it abuse for those who bypass a system that would serve them just as well (let's admit it, our system works well for the rich and powerful) only to push tax-paying Canadians back in line.
*** Oh, come on, you know they are.****
