Istanbul Faces the Night :-) Europe's 2010 Cultural Capital

Istanbul is in the Air! Europe's cultural capital for 2010 is getting ready for its biggest season yet and everything is almost ready. More bars, architecture, exotic fashions and major food stuffs plus Galleries & Museums are awaiting your cultural taste buds. The people here are basically all shined & polished and ready to share their city. A few are worried because who wouldn't be a little apprehensive about their city holding up to the opinionated standards from major travel writers around the world descending on the city ? Me not included .
So.... I'm telling you.... they are ready for the challenge to satisfy and never has the city been more alive than I can remember. Basically the city is just blossoming all over again with promise and real flowers. My first visit being in 1977.
Yes, sexy is in and the modern haircuts of the day grace many a head. Quaint streets with spectacular architecture are decorated with every kind of night-time establishment imaginable and it's all awaiting your approval with friendly service and a charming attitude, something not felt for years in many other overly touristed cities. Plus the music of the city is something that will charm just about anyone from Frank S. to Paris H. Check out Erol Evgin as a Famous Istanbul Musician / Actor.
Erol Evgin's music can be heard here along with the making of Turkeys favorite veggy snack Gözleme in the video below . Play while looking at the images for a further sensation.
So if your ready to marvel at an old established culture gone wildly modern, sexy and fashionable then Istanbul is the place to hang your hat this summer. Perched over seven hilltops with views and boulevards to make you think, New York, Paris, Barcelona or Rome. So, Look Out!!! Turkey is not just a bird for the winter holidays.
So if you get the travelers itch from seeing these images, call your friends

and tell them to come and have the chance to remember or experience this formidable city thats just plain fun and exciting. It's also a very reasonably priced city and does not lack the small or big details of a major locations.

Photographs inside the 300 year old Cagaloglu Hamam Turkish bathhouse. One of the 1000 things one must do in a lifetime. I spent 3 hours here and whistled all the Ennio Morricone tunes I could remember because the echo was so superb.

My heart jumped at the word: Istanbul ! I'm a little envious that you are there. But your pictures don't do justice to your words. Where is the Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, Grand Bazaar, Sunken Palace, ferry boats that run between Europe and Asia? The faces of young simit sellers and street vendors of sour cherry juice, the Egyptian Bazaar? Old men sitting in coffee shops, playing a game of backgammon, puffing on their nargile? The Galata Tower, Hisar, sweet shops, pudding shops, Turkish baths? Istanbul, like much of Turkey, is a land of contrasts. There is all that Western glitter, but don't be surprised to see women covered up as well.
Enjoy your stay- eat, breathe, drink my city. I miss it so.

Dear FusunA,
Your right where are these magnificent treasures? At first I was just trying to capture the people and their electricity that pulsates through the city, then I read your post and made some corrections and will make some more tonight. Thanks for the additional call for images.

What an amazing, wonderful post. You do the most incredible pictures. I love Istanbul. People who haven't been frequently marvel that I spent a week there disguised as a local after 9/11, but your Burberry scarf photo tells the tale. Thanks for sharing your journey and your eyes.
Dear Kathy Riordan,
How interesting a situation being here durning that. Glad you dropped by and shared your interesting thoughts and comments.

Wow! Fantastic photo essay. Istanbul in on the top of my list for new places to travel; I hear it is an excellent city for solo women travelers. In my mind, I'm already there.

Interesting style. Istanbul seems very prosperous and fun.
Your photos speak well for a wondrous city that puts the "cosmo" back in 'cosmopolitan'. They also continue to herald your sublime sensitivity and shrewd "uniqueness detection" mechanism.

Dear JOY MARS,
Indeed a vast contrast between the two. The properity of the future has the Turks just about dancing in the streets. Making the whole city really FUN.

Thank you for the additions. I think I even recognized a face whom I haven't met yet. Oh, yes, the acoustics in those Turkish Hamams. . . Make you think you are the nightingale itself. Enjoy your sojourn. I can find Ali Baba products here in Montréal too, and still remeber the first time I tasted apple tea in Kapali Carshi in those tiny hour glass shaped clear tea glasses. . Oh, memories !
Thanks for the wonderful comment and support.
