A Paradisiacal Staycation

Photography is a matter of measure. When the interrelated elements of the image are correct we capture time, spirit and place in an unforgettable moment that stays with us a lifetime.

When the first signs of fall greet me with a cooler day heralding autumn, I find myself looking at my old slides of yesterday when unexplored horizons still existed with amazing places in their touristic infancy awaiting our attention so that they could irretrievably change for the worse.

I cherish my memories and make them come alive again through the photographs I took back then. You need not go far to enjoy the benefits of a staycation. Just look into your old photographs.

The beauty of making photographs for me is that years and decades later you can remember an entire day because of a single image taken on a particular day.

You remember what lead up to that image and what came after you finished making a photograph. Sometimes the surprise is in finding pictures that seemed all too common when taking them, only to dazzle you now and make you ever so glad you took them.

The images here are from up to 35 years ago when Kodacrome ruled the waves. It was the film of choice for those who wanted that something extra in the quality of their photography.

The look has changed now, but these old images, in their  fading glory, have both a nostalgic quality and a feeling of yesteryear in their tonality.

Oh to travel the world as you have and to capture memories as you do ... what a blessing ... what a gift.

Absolutely beautiful!
What a post! I mean what a post! I have learned so much from your posts. Simply brilliant. R
My photos are not even close to the artistic genius of yours. I enjoyed this so much because I have never been anywhere. Thank you.
I held my breath while viewing these priceless pieces of yours (both the post and photos). So gifted.
Luv Nepal's colorful images too, luv capturing the smiley faces when I was there.

Thanks for the world tour in ten mins. There are several gems in this batch. What tales you must have. Thanks really, thank you.
These photos are just stunning, Algis...there is so much here. Thank you so much for sharing your travels and vision!
I like the idea that a camera can be your traveling friend. My camera and I are so happy together. I can see that you are like that too. Thank you for these images.
Agog am I. Boggled.
The quotes were a good embellishment to this incredible photo journey. Thanks for allowing me to view these -each one, without exception, is a work of art. I really cannot express how much I enjoy your posts. The sun peeking through in the Chang Mai, Thailand one was especially stunning.
Oh so beautiful and wonderful! The colors, the people, the buildings, the shapes…. what a treat! I went to your website and have bookmarked so I can "travel"whenever…

Last year I scanned family photos, some from the early 1900s, and when I enlarged them and looked at them on the monitor, I could see the expressions and features in a way I never could before, looking at a small photograph. It was amazing and eye-opening as well.

What wonderful stories you must have to go with these photos. Thank you for sharing them with us.
Rated and shared on FB.
Another terrific collage of humanity and photography!

All of these are great, but the picture of Kerala, India, could be on the cover of National Explorer or a dozen other magazines. Great Work my man!
With these photos alone you could make a coffee table book! I feel as though I saw these places with you. I just started taking photos since starting my blog in February and have so enjoyed it. Although I am an artist, there is a lot to learn about the medium and the camera as a tool. My kids both took photography and make suggestions. Oh I would lOVE to go to those places Algis. A well-deserved EP!
Wonderful! Thanks for sharing your staycation.
such a wondrous weaving of words and images...a wistful escape and journey to the center...Terrific post, Algis! r and happy EP!
You are the consummate artist, my friend! I love the selection of quotes which complement your signature photos.

Around the world through eyes that see a WHOLE lot more than most of us would. I'm still traveling--lots more to see here, and I want to see every single frame.

What a gift--in every sense of the word.
your use and mastery of perspective is really impressive...this post should be developed into a book...rated
the images came through.

thank u.

places, things, moments, stark realizations,
i will never see, though i have an
eye that sort of freezes things into tableaus
tiresome to others, and me, i admit..

once in awhile...

those images burn into brain with vigor.
A great idea for a post, Algis, and beautiful pictures as always. But I also particularly liked your medidation on the nature of picture taking, especially "Sometimes the surprise is in finding pictures that seemed all too common when taking them, only to dazzle you now and make you ever so glad you took them." Indeed.
What a dazzling and intimate world safari. Your photos gifted me with a fantastic journey to places I've never been, and may never be, but which all feel real to me now. Maybe it is the quality of the light in many of them, which gives them a feeling of timelessness. Just lovely. Thank you for posting!

mistercomedy I really appreciate what you said about the book. I too hope one day this does happen but the way things are going they are going to crucify me.

James M. Emmerling Glad you stopped by and I hope you have some images that stuck with you because this is from a time when life was cheap and the cell phone was not on the horizon.

VariousArtists So glad you pointed that out because over the early years I did not take alot of images because of this reason . Now I wonder just how much I lost out on because trying to out think an images does not work in hindsight. Thanks VA and more.

JJ-Dalton So glad to have done this for you.I am actually delighted that you had a nice time and more. These images are from my humble beginnings where I knew not much and am still trying to learn more. Thanks again and again.

Algis Kemezys
Thank you for taking me to Nepal! I take hundreds of pictures in a single day and look over them repeatedly. these pictures are wonderful.
I especially like the bike rider in Bali--very well composed, and on the fly, too.

r
Razzle Dazzle, Thats so wonderful, so glad you saw and enjoyed my images.ThX!

Con Chapman, Yes that image too is one of my favorite memories because after this was taken I went swimming with the dolphins and had an excellent time doing that.
What gorgeous images! I love the richness of the colors! And that shot of the giant rock formation jutting out of the sea looks wonderful and surreal!
Algis, I just saw this on the cover and apologize for not noticing it before now. Amazing images, I envy your amazing itinerary to beautiful places around the world and your wonderful ability to capture the moment that encapsulates the essence of that place. Gorgeous.

(I don't understand why so many images didn't load though...is there a bandwidth limit from the hosting site?)
Alysa Salzberg, Thanks so much. You would love that place with the tall island stone like that years ago.Today I have heard how the big hotel chain has arrived and now it is not just a quiet little place to be alone in the grip of a surreal natural place.

bbd, Oh that is so fine of you to say. I wonder too about these images that are posted and why they keep dropping out.You ask a great question. I wonder if it is that. Unfortunately the original images are back in the hardrives of a computer used many years ago and I have yet to reconnect it and extract those images.
Gorgeous photo essay. Amazing...
What can I say? Fantastic!
"Kodachrome....you give us the nice, bright colours, you give us the greens of summer..."
These are fabulous, Algis, I'm glad you get such a fabulous vacation just by looking at your photos...that first one in Thailand is so surreal, and I love the Cyprus shot with nude goddess or someone in front, horny old laughing Pan in back. (That is Pan?)
Brilliant framing there, friend. : )

On a tangent, I've been wondering, when you were in Turkey, did you happen to go to Catal Huyuk (sp?) ? It's the largest Neolithic site in the Near East with successive layers of habitation going back to 7700 BC or something...
I am currently fascinated with it.
Just wondering...
Such beautiful work, Algis! It's too bad the Open Salon resources couldn't display your pictures and text in one place.
Such beautiful work, Algis! It's too bad the Open Salon resources couldn't display your pictures and text in one place.
You had me at Dorothy's Ruby Slippers from The Wizard of Oz. Or perhaps, that's what I wanted to see.

Then, everything else was spectacular at the very least.
Your bicycle photo is my fave.
But, I want to shadow you on this trip and the next and the next!
Christina Simon, Oh thanks so much for that! You a real Pal.THX

Christine Geery, Your really fantastic for saying that too. THX

Just Thinking...,That statue I think is of Augustas. He has a slight erection too. The other place yes indeed I know of it. I have not been there but it does pertain to Cow worship and shows how cow worship was part of the fabric of their lives at that time. There is an even older place Gobecky teppie, that dates back 15,ooo years and was then a garden of eden. This is SW just above Syria. Turkey is really packed with treasures and more.

Megan McDonald, Yeah but at least you can still see them by clicking through. Thanks again for the fine comment.

Just Cathy, That you can and thanks for joining me now and in the future.
Thanks for that info, Algis.
I googled and found some stunning images....of "gobekli tepe" ? Never had heard of it before, thanks so much!
I contend it was not pure worship of cows, but their symbolism as life giving, their horns and face shape outline mimic the uterus shape as well. Cows, Minoan bulls, were worship symbols, -- but it was goddess worship, I believe-- not because I'm referring to a source, but that's what I believe.
Future generations might think we worship shiny discs (CDs)....Sun symbol worship? Moon symbols? Garbage worship?

Now, the word worship looks funny after writing it too often. : )
Wow, truely some of the most beautiful photographs I have ever seen. Definitely worthy of National Geographic!
