Stone is the primordial and most prevalent medium of the human race. It was the original material of habitation in caves and stone huts and the substance that gave shape to our greatest monuments and places of worship. Everyday-stone eventually gave way to the refinement and elegance of marble, and the ever-presence and durability of granite, but stone is stone and it has served humanity in all its quests including the artistic.

There are shapes and spirits in stone, there are gods and heroes and common folk and ideas and poetry in stone; it can be claimed that all that is dear and all that is feared in every aspect of the human experience begins in stone and can be expressed by variously manipulating it, carving it, shaping it, taming it, building with it, but never totally conquering it because it is more powerful and all-encompassing even than the infinite capacity of the human mind.

Stone is alive, seething with images and idols impatient to be discovered and come forth, to inform and enhance our intellect, to enrich our lives, to remind us that somewhere in the depths of our misspent lives there is a quality that is irreproachable and pure and all-powerful.

Stone is an endless source of inspiration, because its possibilities are without limit; they are eternal. Something that is carved in stone or constructed from stone will live forever; it will in some fashion, in at least some fragmentary way, survive for millennia to proclaim to all future generations of irascible, fragile, ephemeral humankind that something nobler and more permanent than our loftiest aspirations lives all around us if only we were able for a moment to forgo our petty concerns and look around us in search of the divine.

Stone along with what has been painted and carved into it provides the oldest record of existence on this planet, what a shame its tales have been kept secret by a cabal of talking Chimpanzees.
Beautiful my friend! How unfortunate that we will never see works as fabulous as these by any artists to come. Simply lovely. Happy Holidays to you as well!

Algis, I love stone, the Winter Solstice, and your photo essays! Happy Holidays to you and yours!
Creepy, mysterious and irresistible at the same time. Another wonderful photo essay from you, sir.
Your fascination with stone has been such a gift to all of us. These photos and words are an inspiration to us humble poets. Write something that lasts, I guess that is our goal. You have shared something that will last on this darkest day.
I thought I saw your image in one of those faces. The fifth one from the top.

More gorgeousness from you, and our friend the earth. I am a fellow stone lover, and like you, can speak of this love better in images than words.
Nice work, Byron and Algis both.
Makes me want to go out and carve something. What lovely textures and words. Thank you Thank you!!!
Just lovely Algis.. Happy season to you..:)
HUGGGGGGGGGGG
These were incredibly beautiful images, Algis. Sometimes I see figures in stones that are there naturally.
That just blows my mind, how an artist can do that, out of stone. Great Job and Merry Christmas my man!
These stones seem as if they could talk. Magnificent.
This is a beautiful exploration of the gifts of stone! My kids and I have stones that we have picked up from every place we have ever been...smooth, rough, sparkly, twisted, cracked, split, orange, obsidian, grey, shiny, white, translucent, round...an infinite variety of treasures to found strewn generously across the whole earth, enough treasures for everyone! Thanks for this!
Happy Winter Solstice to you too!
Beautiful work, my lovely friend. It is like you are illuminating the statue within the block, showing us the life frozen in time that can become any thing once it is set free to move itself.

Best wishes on this solstice.
Some of the stone figures look as if they are immersed in water: amazing. Thank you, as always, for sharing the world's beauty with us. Merry Christmas to you, Algis!
The pagan peoples of the British Isles seem to understood the power of stone. Thanks, Algis, for the Christmas gift of these wonderful photos, and Happy Winter Solstice to you as well.
Have you ever tried carving in stone?

I haven't, nor have many other people in the current era. those few that have tried have found it extremely difficult which leads to a great mystery about how they did such an enormous amount of volume and quality in ancient times. the Greeks are one of the greatest but they're almost certainly not the ones that did the greatest quality and volume. that Honer might go to the Angkor's who built Angkor Wat and many other temples in a time period that couldn't be replicated to day. In fact when they make replicas they're almost always in plaster.

Another unsolved mystery, if you ask me, or even if you don't.

Greta picture as usual.
What a beautiful post. You always share something valuable with us. Thank you for elevating this experience.
Simply brilliant. Thank you!
Spectacular images and inspiring text. Thank you.

Very fascinating photo essay. A meeting of classical art with the digital age. That in itself is a measure of creativity in this time. Great work as always!
Have you had a chance to see "Cave of Forgotten Dreams?" Available on Netflix streaming or DVD, the oldest paintings on stone in the world. It is so touching to see these carvings and paintings, many of them before recorded history, and wonder about our ancestors, their lives and thoughts. Happy New Year to you!

Hi Algis- beautiful work! I find your title to be most evocative- having gotten to know you and being able to relate I really love this title and it works well with the work but gives it even more dimension
So beautiful, I wonder at all they have seen and watched go by. Thanks for this Algis
Thanks so much HR. Maybe I did that just for you! Have a great Christmas and Fab NY"
WOW! Loved them. Inspiring.
Thoroughly rich post. It has a centering quality to it, like stone itself. Carl Jung, I think, mentioned something about stone being symbolic of the center of our being; something to return to again and again, since therein lies our essence.
Spectacular. Wishing you happy holidays.
I really enjoyed it. Wasn't it Michelangelo who said his job was to free the human form trapped inside a rock? I remember watching that "Life after people show" they said the only thing that might still be around thousands of years from now is Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse-Things carved in granite. That stuck with me. It's something ain't it? We all try to leave an impression while were here. It really is a lucky few who are immortal forever
Byron Ayanoglu's words are set in stone. Awesome images. R
This was a very beautiful post... the photos are amazing.. you are right in every single word... stone is for ever... humans will leave this earth and stones will be the remainder of what we were.... of how we came to our own destruction... amazing post..
Happy hollidays friend... hugs from Colombia...
I love your work

Stunning! I can feel the ancient mysteries with this beautiful combination of images and words.
Please let me know when the book is out!
Have a fabulous holiday!
Algis and Byron, if you haven't already made this plan, you should publish this post as one of those gigantic coffee table books with tipped-in color plates. The images need to be huge, they are gorgeous and timeless. This is an area where you have to touch the surface of the image, in which computers fall short. Wonderful.
A wonderful synthesis Algis, combining art and time, the ancient and the modern, beauty and the wonder of it. Your work lies just outside the linear march of time, beauty without constraints. Thank you.
I am on a hunt for new superlatives to describe your incredible work, Algis. I am always blown away by the ancients' ability to carve smooth curves and details like folds in the vestments. Just beautiful.

Lezlie
Delightful post. As an artist I find images in everything, in stone, in clouds, in odd stains on the walls, in random ceramic tiles in subway stations, in leaves and branches of trees, in stirred pudding, in rising smoke from cigarettes, in a baked potato, in words, random or arranged, in musical melodies, in the sound of a flapping flag, in gravel paths, in the sand at the seashore, and many many more. Because the images are in me and leap out to ride all things around me into my consciousness. Stone lasts a bit longer but a few million years is but a moment in cosmic time and a mountain can dissolve like a cloud given the proper time.
Beautiful. Beautiful.
What's most impressive about this work is how the sculptor managed to express emotions through the shapes and figures. Much of it is haunting.
The Greeks did have a talent for bringing beauty out of stone as you have a talent for bringing beauty from the lens of a camera. I hope your new year brings more opportunity for you to share the beauty with the rest of us.
Your art never fails to amaze...so beautiful, Algis.
Grand post. I enjoyed this quite a bit, thank you for posting this work.
Happy Holidays and all the best to you and yours.

Anne Cameron Cutri, Oh that is just marvelous..Thanks again and may you have a great 2012.

Witchywmn, it is my great pleasure. So glad you enjoyed this. Cheers!
You have managed to demonstrate yet again your sensitivity, insight, and creativity all at once and, in the process, treat every friend and curious visitor at this blog to a breathtaking array of both the oldest stone renderings and the most modern re-imagination of them. Bravo, Algis (and kudos Byron for the wise words), for having raised our consciousness with your art.
Algis, this is magnificent in three ways:
The art of photographing
Your lovely text to go along with it
Third:Opening the perspective to the divine;eternity;offering hope and peace to the somewhat lost human race.
Your attitude is needed to help make the turn possible.
Thank you so much.

These images are wonderful and the verse intriguing. I saw an exhibit of Greek and Roman art a few years ago and fully expected some of the statues to start speaking. Amazing.
Oh,I did not have access to the music,I'll try at you tube.
On second thought:
You could writ a text for meditation, either on one subject oron divers topics.
Breathtaking!

Image # 11 looks like Imp 1. :)
amdad44, Your the best and an angel of fine poetic words ! THANKS!

Heidi Banerjee, Your also an angel of divine magnitude.THANKS!

I could stare at these all day and still not see all they are about. Your eye for beauty is astounding.
How did I miss this!??
Thank you thank you so much for these views of a land I've never seen, for views of sculpture from artists I'll never meet, for sharing in your wanderings...the ancient art is just my favorite. Visible reminders, clues, to who we actually are if we'd just wake up.
If/when I am wealthier, I will travel all over in search of the ancient arts and stand in front of them in awe as I am doing now in front of your eyes' views of these amazing places.
I wonder, did the artists themselves ever chisel and sculpt with centuries in mind? With future humanity in mind?
Wonderful, haunting, and inspriing. The embedded quality intrigues me. It is as if the umbilical cord between nature and art has not been cut. The artwork doesn't stand on its own, it remains part of nature. To me, it dramatizes the idea--the reality--that art is an interaction, an encounter between natural material and the artist. The outcome of a dialogue, or an interactive process. Ah, I better shut up before I sound pompous trying to explain something that arouses wonder in me...[r]
Magnificent, Algis. Your photography and, of course, the sculpture. Incredibly beautiful!
Beyond neat!!

Rated, but of course!
So, you were "born that way"?
How stone lends itself to such exquisite and varied renderings amazes me. Many of them look like they created themselves through some force of nature. From the most primitive to the most detailed, the images you've captured are extraordinarily beautiful. Your photos and Byron's text are breathtaking.
phyllis45's Bright Eyes, Thanks so much! I have often felt the same thing and tried to expand on that in my humble way by doing this.

Heidi Banerjee, Thanks again. I wish I could write something like that but unfortunately my writing skills are rather weak...but maybe one day!

V.Corso, I am breathless over that one. Thanks so much!

Blacklilly89, As are you for saying that. Thanks for dropping bye.

Lunchlady 2, I guess building those sculptures lead to this in a small way. What you say is really what I was hoping would happen but did not know until I read this. Thanks again!

Just Thinking... You know, I think the artists had an ability to turn this stone into manageable form, making it soft and easy to carve by introducing a vibrational harmonic. Then upon stopping the sound, vibration frequency it would resolidify.Just one of my wigged out theories. So glad you got around to see this and comment. Thanks again!

Donegal Descendant, That is the best statement ever and if I have permission I would love to use that. I wish now you had continued because what you say, upon reading it, has me saying Yes ,yes, YES. yeS yEs. Thanks a million!

Chicken Màâàn, Oh your marvelous and then some. Thanks so very much.

Tinkerertink69 That is simple and so much what I wanted to do. it just took me awhile getting my technique together to make these this way. Thanks again ....

Harry's Ghost, I think maybe I was because when I was a baby my mother said all I did was cry and play with stones. She said I cried so much she called me Elvis not Algis.

Margaret Feike, Another very fine statement and yes what You say is also what I felt. I hope I can use that statement too someplace some where as I would like to use everyones here. Thanks so much for this!

Absolutely beautiful--a sort of proof of everlasting life.
A most amazing post, best of luck with publication! A haunting and inspiring work.
Very cool. Loved the variety of skill, composition and angles in the sculpting and bas reliefs. Excellent work, as always.

I also think a vibrational harmonic is the true purpose of Stonehenge. Healing the human form. I think that is why Methuselah lived to a thousand or whatever it was...it is just ridiculous when the ancients were declared primitives.
That would be us, I say.
PS -- They thought Copernicus was wigged out too : )
jlsathre, Thanks so much and yes I guess it is.
