People born before 1946 were called -
The Greatest Generation.

People born between 1946 and 1964 are called -

The Baby Boomers.

People born between 1965 and 1979 are called -

Generation X.

People born between 1980 and 2010 are called -
Generation Y.

Why do we call the last group - Generation Y ?

Y should I get a job?

Y should I leave home and find my own place?

Y should I get a car when I can borrow yours?

Y should I clean my room?

Y should I wash and iron my own clothes?

Y should I buy any food?

But perhaps a cartoonist explained it the most eloquently below.

Hahahahaha. Nice.
I can't see the cartoon either, Algis.
I like your Muse. Maybe she could visit me sometime too.
When I graduated high school, gas was 35 cents a gallon and you could buy a good used car for $250 or a three bedroom house for $15,000. My kid (born in 1980) was a slacker from high school until his son was born. Now he works two jobs while his wife works full time as well. They're paying over $4.00 a gallon for gas, a decent used car costs over $5,000 and a three bedroom house in California costs $300,000. It's a whole different world for Gen Y.
I'm glad that I can consider myself an exception to that rule ;)
Serious. I just took a photo of my son.
He was sowing salad green seed. Moon?
He pretended he was gonna Moon me.
`
He's more moral. He's more wise ethical too.

Spoken by...a parent?

Nice job.
It's not scary that anybody asks these questions. It's scary that the answers aren't obvious. I grew up wanting to move out of my parents' control.
Will there be a time when moving on to Z brings new prosperity and peace of mind to Ys ?

~r~
Mary Stanik ,ThankQ Mary!

geezerchick OK I am sure this sort of idea has a lot to do with it. ThankQ!

Trudge164 ThankQ!

Heidi Banerjee, What an interesting idea, I wonder myself.
Hey, Algis. We have two great Y-guys now in their twenties, who only marginally fit this pattern, but every generation gets cartooned -- speaking as someone ... from the sixties.

I'm already working on how to describe the generation after Y. Z is too easy, and implies that they'll turn out boring. "Global Generation" sounds too corporate. "Cosmopolitan Generation" too Helen Girly Brownish. Green Generation? (one hopes) World Generation? Postpostmoderns? (dodging the question, "postmodern is pre-what?")

How about we older and wiser guys help organize a "Name Yourselves" contest and invited post Y-people to either create their own identities or reject the whole notion of generational identity entirely? Just me talking here.

Keep those comic and creative bursts coming!
I am a baby boomer currently watching the destruction of America. Your post is indicative of the mental breakdown that takes place when constant loss becomes part of our lives. Fighting is still an option. Looting is another.
