Bio
Writer, game developer, artist. Also raconteuse, dilettante, and passionate advocate. I've been called an angel of wisdom and I've been called a judgmental idiot. Sooner or later I'm bound to say something that you disagree with; feel free to tell me your side of the story. I listen to other people's opinions and have occasionally been known to concede that they might have a point and alter mine. I use too many semicolons and I have terrible taste in music. I'm the sort of person who thinks it's more telling to mention that than that I'm married and had a foster daughter but she's grown now. By objective standards, my life is probably a disaster - no health insurance and a chronic illness - but my happiness quotient is the highest of anyone I know. Sometimes I tell sad stories but please don't let them make you sad.

"AWOL Sailor found Hanged"

This started as a comment on a post by laurenjwalter but took on a life of its own. Rather than go off-topic on her comment thread, I decided to make it into its own post.

Fingerlakeswanderer made the comment that all of us here at OS are writers, and that as a…

Size DDD Boobs and Regional Department Stores

Taking a break from my usual bitching about my diet to say:  YAY!  My boobs are smaller!

Not what most women probably think of as a reason to rejoice, but then, most women don't have E cup boobs. See, the thing about E cups (or DDD depending on the brand) is… Read full post »

Millet: not just for the birds!

I guess the economy must be pretty bad after all - now I'm eating bird seed.

Grocery prices recently have gotten so out of hand that there's a new camaraderie in the aisles. "Is that for your cat or for you?" a lady I've never met before today cackles, as I… Read full post »

Treasure box, or: My dad kicked me in the head...

The funny thing, the sad thing, is that I know people who had it far worse than I had it. I didn't live in fear. 364 days of the year (365 on leap years) I was a pretty ordinary kid in a family which, while it was stressful in a lot… Read full post »

My Coke Addiction

I've been clean now for 49 days.

The sound is the worst of it. "Open the damn thing in the kitchen!"  I yell at my husband, who rolls his eyes and takes a deep pull.

Yeah, he's terrified of me. He could stand to get off the stuff too. Some mornings… Read full post »

Ghost story - The Laughing Man

(Inspired by Jodi's post on ghost photography.)

The second place my husband and I lived in together - the place where we were married - was a crappy little townhouse in an apartment complex called Ridgeway Trace. Ridgeway Trace had been a swanky place to live when it was built in… Read full post »

Food that works for me

This is the latest installment of my continuing quest to improve my health by eating better despite a tight budget. I haven't been on a scale this week but my husband says I feel smaller and I can now pull off the pants which used to be too tight without unbuttoning… Read full post »

Fighting back: Part 1, family history

This is a post about diets.

I have mixed feelings about diets. My mother has been on a diet since she was sixteen. Periodically she will announce, "I've lost five pounds!"  Or twelve pounds. Or forty pounds. But forty pounds is not all that visible a change when you are almost… Read full post »
