Sun Halo

Rate: 10 Flag

Mid-day deep in the forest in the Pacific Northwest, cirrostratus clouds formed with microscopic ice crystals. Somehow through magic and science, borne of providence or serendipity, or the unlikely combination of them all, sunlight made itself known .

The scientists tell us that the angle of the sun must break up and shine through one of the prismatic faces of the crystals at exactly 22 degrees for this phenomenon to occur.

The ancients have told us that it means great changes are to occur.

Greek statues were often protected from bird droppings by metal discs whose shape was that of the halo. Sort of a tin foil hat for those whose  future was already set in stone. Further familiar usage in religious icons and such often resulted in heated disagreements and unsettling dinner conversations which then sometimes turned to war.

I just liked how it looked.

12:22 in the afternoon, looking straight up through the trees.
It's called a 22 degree halo.
I am struck both by the beauty of the photo, and your lovely description.

"...sunlight made itself known." I love it!
@ Jeannete DeMain,

Hello. Haven't seen you in these parts lately. Thanks for the compliment. It was very striking.
Not sure that I've seen one before, and then the next day upon return one began to form also over our home. hmmm?
I have heard these referred to as sun dogs and have seen a few in my time. Gorgeous shot, aka.
@ Scarlet Sumac,

I'll have to look up "sun dogs". I managed to get about 1/2 dozen shots before the effect faded.
Thank you.
This is so beautiful. Thank you for sharing it with us. -R-
@ Christine Geery,

It needed sharing.
Thank you.
Breathtaking! Thank you for capturing it and bringing it for us to see.
@ anna1liese,

It was so surprising to see. You could wait forever and never know if it were on the way.
@ jali,

The wonder of it all is worthy of admiration.
Thank you.

@ James M. Emmerling,

It's a bit like a jam to have you comment to me with my own words.
A call and response .
Appreciated.

Thank you for taking the time to come by. It's good when Mother Nature's surprises are just beautiful and not harmful.
bird droppings, tin-foil hats, stupidity that results in war. we've come so far from those silly ancients. you are a lucky guy to have caught that photo. we're lucky you posted it.
@ Candace Mann,

Thank you for reading. It was a lucky day.

We've come so far it's nearly full circle.
Time to turn around?
ancients aint silly.
we have come far , sure, regarding the mathematical

prisms,

@ Beth Mann,

Thank you.
I didn't know the sun could do that. I've seen high clouds go prismatic-rainbowy when the sun shines through them at the right angle, but never a halo.
@ nanatehay,

It was impressive. Too many trees overhead to get a shot of the entire circle. That would have been an interesting shot as well.
Thanks for the stop in.

@ RomanticPoetess,

Glad to see you could get some time to swing by to read.
I did not know a thing of these sun halos either before I saw it.
There's always something to learn.

does not write in july.
that crack of dawn thing from the last post
was rather good, and i was hoping that maybe,
just maybe,
we would get another post before
winter from you.

@ JME,

July is fast approaching its wrap up.
If inspired I shall let you know.

The "good excuses" may come in handy for other dodges as well.
