Etta James and Johnny Otis: Synchronicity

Rate: 7 Flag

The news this morning is that two of the greatest Rhythm & Blues musicians of all time have passed away. Johnny Otis, most famous  I suppose as the singer of the doo-wop hit "Willie and the Hand Jive" is gone at age 90.

Etta James, is probably best known for a song sung by many but never better than her rendition :"At Last" . She passed away this morning at age 73.

The synchronicity is that Johnny Otis was a large force in her life helping her get a start in the business when she about 14. He is credited with composing her  first hit, "The Wallflower",  in 1955.

Someone else here at OS will certainly compose a more extensive post.

I just wonder about these things. How we criss cross each others pathways and then sometimes, like this, take off at the same time.

I guess the old have to go, to give room to the new, but damn, it's a shame. It is also more than a coincidence who you pass in this life.
@ scanner,

I've criss crossed paths with many myself and wonder why sometimes. Strange place we all are in.

BTW: I don't have any idea how to put a YouTube in the post. So I added a link to them.
Look right... Myriad has one on Etta..

strange synchronicity last night aka
@ tr ig,

I see that. There's one by bobbot also. They know how to add the youtubes so you don't leave the site.

Are you familiar with Johnny Otis' son Shuggie Otis? Check him out if you're not.
Thanks for the drop by......

@ tr ig,
Thanks. Tried .Failed. Will practice. Better focus on the J-O-B.
@ tr ig,

aha. Persistence. Had to try again. Thanks.
Will remove the links now.
It does give one pause, doesn't it?

I am more familiar with Shuggie Otis than Johnny Otis. I didn't know they were father and son!
@ Jeanette DeMain,

Yes they were. Shuggie, the childhood prodigy is 58 now. I saw a youtube with Johnny, Shuggie and Roy Buchanan. Now that tr ig has brought me up to speed with the rest of you music bloggers maybe I'll put some things out there that interest me. also.
Thanks for the stop in.
@ Margaret Bowen,

AKA: Regarding Willy & the Hand Jive ... I grew up to Clapton's version on his 461 Ocean Blvd. Thanks for the Otis version. And Etta, of course. Gorgeous.

Sorry we are losing these great rhythm and blues artists. Although R&B never left, I think it's time to revisit and revive it more than never!
I am really flubbing up on my comments today. More than EVER -- not never!
@ Scarlett Sumac,

Yes, an R & B Revival seems like a good retro idea.
Flubbing goes with the turf on a Friday evening.
Thanks for the stop in.
Good job of recognizing this synchronicity, aka. It's never as simple as out with the old in with the new.
@ John A Bayerl,

Thanks John for the comment. I think that simplicity is a fabrication of our limited imaginations. I appreciate you reading this post among the many.
nice. otis would have been totally overlooked if you hadn't done this. i love the hand jive song. and ms. james is a favorite from long, long ago.someone here (i forget who - there are so many up) has a youtube video of her and chuck berry and keith richards doing 'rock and roll music' in '86. blazing heat, that woman.
@ femme forte aka candace,

I know you don't have much time in these parts. I'm just here a moment myself. Thanks for thinking to say hello.
