New Series: Fizzle Fridays

Rate: 0 Flag

I'm starting a new series on OS called "Fizzle Fridays," Friday being the day that new job listings appear in the MLA's Job Information List (JIL).  Last week there were 11 new job listings added to the initial 76 in my field.  This week, 14.  Those numbers are, at the absolute best, weak.  And I don't mean "weak" as in little-kitten-mewing-for-milk weak, but just-out-of-a-10-year-coma weak.  The word "atrophy" is equally apt for both situations, since last year's JIL was updating at a rate of about 30-40 new jobs/week, if I remember correctly.  This is just plain *dismal*.

Fizzle Fridays... I hate to be a pessimist, but I'm reading the JIL's Magic-8-ball, and all it seems to read is, "Outlook Not So Good."

I would trust the 8-ball. It's as good a prognosticator as any who get paid for it. You gotta learn to loaf, waste time, even write fiction! ;-)
Fiction writing-- feels like an even more exclusive club than academia! (At least that's what this outsider's perspective perceives, maybe I'm wrong.)

Thanks for dropping by, Sirenita!
