Bio
I'm a high school English teacher who teaches on the South Side of Chicago. I'm from Arkansas. I'm a white lady whose last name is Japanese (thanks to my Japanese Yankee husband). My brother in law says I'm a sitcom waiting to happen. I'm married and have a little girl who is three and a half, and a baby boy who is nineteen months old. I have lost 76 pounds in the last year and a half, and barefoot running is my new obsession. So much to share!

Shooting Outside Dunbar High School

Rate: 5 Flag

I have a coworker who texted me about this a couple of hours ago. I am so sick of this crap -- I don't understand when kids are going to stop shooting at each other. I hope and pray that someone will learn something from this, but I don't think that will happen. Thank God no one was killed.

The shooting occurred outside the high school where I teach. There was a basketball game going on, and then apparently a silver truck pulled up to the school and opened fire. Five males were shot.

The assumption is that this is gang related.

That was very intense
I can so easily slip into hopelessness after reading about these things. For the last two years I taught at Anacostia High School in D.C. and after awhile I just started to feel so sad all the time. I still carry that place - and the violence of its children - with me.

But if we don't believe that things will get better, who will? Take heart, if you can.
Scary shit. Like you and most people, I am so tired of this.
I'd like to say this is unbelievable, but it's become so common that it doesn't even reach national attention anymore. That's the part that has become unbelievable. It's a sad, sad comment on our society. I'll never understand it. Where are the parents of these kids?
Amy, I stand corrected. Just heard a five second sound bite about the shooting and Dunbar on MSNBC. Five seconds. That is how numb we've become about children shooting other children. What have we become?!
A change of gonna come. In Illinois Governors sell senate seats; poor kids do drive-bys.

Enjoy your sabbatical.
Why didnt Obama pick you for Education Sec?
I heard that the people were inside the game first, but I don't know how true that is. I guess one will never really know what the truth.
If this same thing had happened in the suburbs in front of New Trier, rather than in the city in front of Dunbar, it'd have been on the front page of the Chicago Tribune & Sun Times, rather than, what page was it on again? Read more at www.WhatTeddSedd.com
Ron, your second comment made me laugh. If only Obama would call me!

CM -- you do feel sad all the time -- but you can't let it get to you. I have to just compartmentalize it, and I spend a lot of time breathing deeply and thinking happy thoughts. It's tough, though.

Michael -- it's so easy to pretend this stuff isn't happening -- and unfortunately, a lot of the parents are not around at all, or are part of the gang culture themselves. I don't know how this will end.

Ted, you make a good point. I'll check out your site.

pretend_farmer -- at least no one was killed. that's something.

Olga -- I hope work is ok on Monday. I'll be thinking about you.

UK -- I want to believe in public schools, but it's hard sometimes.
When my kids were young,a glock was found in the back pack of a 2nd grader. The kids said he brought it so he could shoot a 1st grader who wouldn't sell him a "pokeymon" card worth 50 dollars, for 5 bucks. He(the 2nd grader) had to drag the back pack due to the gun being so heavy! Nobody was hurt thank the Lord, but the story was not front page, and the parents were never notified. I heard it on the news and I lived across the street from the school. We need to find SOMEway to get it across to people that are kids are still needlessly dying.Thank you for keeping the subject at the forfront, like it needs to be. Thank you, Twystedmama
