Nobody was expecting  the arrival of Mayhem

Not like Storms

Not like Holocausts

Not like mass starvation

Not like political coups

Folks  were just eating dinner

Folks were just commuting

Folks were working at their desks

Folks were just watching a movie

Planes slammed into towers creating infernos

Bullet penetrated windshields without warning

The Joker made a personal appearance killing without script

Batman wasn’t there to save the innocent

A shopper collapses on the sidewalk; a bullet in her chest

Men, women and babies, fall from their chairs

with fries and burgers in hand

Subway riders slaughtered where they sit

Madmen came to murder them

These were not random acts of violence

These were planned assassinations

They were meant to grab our attention

Oh no, not in some far away place

where death is seemingly not our problem... but here

where we live, where we work and where we play

The horror of the hometown massacre is not only about the event but more so it is about all of us and our own sense of security in ordinary places. As the families of the dead and injured go about the business of burying and healing we must go on with the business of living. Any one of us might have been in Aurora or New York on the day Mayhem visited. We live minute to minute and we never think about it until tragedy strikes the innocent and decimates a community.

The truth is: Batman does not exist. The Joker does.

We are all stunned by fateful events which involve decisions. Had we turned this way or that, been there or not, took a certain plane or ran late..we are engaged or we miss mayhem by seconds or miles. These hometown events reinforce our vulnerability as people and as a nation. We cannot run from it nor can we adequately protect ourselves. It waits for its prey and it seizes the moment on its own terms. The story of mankind, unfortunately is the story of good vs evil, the villain and the hero. So often played out on the silver screen in theaters: this time in front of the screen, in the aisles.
My problem with this and all of these tragedies is that the killers fantasies are made real by the talking heads and TV ratings vampires who feed them their fifteen minutes of fame.
Spot on and well said. And the Joker is cloning at warp speed.

Lezlie
jmac. The media did not make the fantasy real. The perp made it real. This act did not and cannot exist in a vacuum. How can the media ignore the event and not write about it? All mass terror ends up as 'news'... But the perp will not enjoy part II. He will end up in prison for the rest of his life or be executed. My opinion is that his final 15 minutes should be on a gurney without cameras. Undoubtedly, he took without repent and spent without remorse. His legacy is insured in the book of most vile.
Lezlie..I fear that movie theaters will now have to employ security guards. Exit door which are meant for emergencies will be barred.
One madman can alter our world.
Thank you for your comment Heidi. I also agree with Matt.
and yet we can help ensure a decline in mass starvations perhaps more easil that we can help ensure a decrease in this particular evil

r.
I agree Jon. It can be done....until some other madman decides to wipe out another population and send them scurrying for shelter in the wastelands of a border country who does not want them either.
We can plant and distribute..what we cannot do is control the politics and the natural disasters that create starvation. Hunger is largely political.
Ande,

The funny thing is that you inadvertently described what it's like to be a civilian in Israel. The place is so small that most actions like this either feel like hometown massacres or actually are.
I was thinking about that Kosh.

How we manage to deal with mayhem is to go about the business of living and re-building. I wouldn't do very well living in Israel.
