Diversity, Artistry, and the O.S. Front Page

Rate: 11 Flag

"Beyond ideas of wrong-doing and right-doing, there is a field.
I'll meet you there..." (Rumi)

With that said, while "10,000 Angels dance on the head of a pin" (this being the glorious diversity that I celebrate here on O.S.), Padraig and others who continue to (in my opinion) appropriately challenge the editorial selections on the O.S. Front Page appear to be pointing out the reality that the main "public entryway" on O.S. (this being the Front Page, naturally) is indeed dominated by a few select posters. I could understand this if this were salon.com (versus OPEN salon.com); however, the editorial selections themselves are preventing the true celebration of diversity that I believe we all would relish in and happily cultivate and support in a collegial manner.

The front page is in fact "controlled" via the editorial selection process, and it is obviously dominated by a few writers (I could name names, but I will not do so - We all know who they are, if we are paying attention); therefore, the reality is, only certain voices will be selected (often repeatedly) and "heard" by more than just a few O.S. readers. This results in the appearance of "diversity" being cultivated and encouraged,  but this is merely an illusion, as anyone tracking the Front Page selections would know.

It does not matter to me if these writers featured on the Front Page are 'good' or 'bad' or consistently 'entertaining' (for we are going beyond such "splitting", as the Rumi quote invites); what matters to me as an O.S. contributor and supporter is that the O.S. editorial process does not allow many voices to have their turn to be heard on a "grander" level via inclusion on the Front Page. This is most unfortunate, in my opinion.

Next: There is something to be said regarding the great French sculptor Rodin's lament regarding the cultural cultivation of artistic mediocrity. The fact is, we all have special and unique gifts. Some people have the gift of being able to mirror their current culture and society with stunning clarity, and also, at times invite (via this ability) society to more closely examine itself and to change (think of Picasso's at-that-time scandalous painting "Guernica" - scandalous due to its unflinching reflection of political and human catastrophy - some even said it was not "art" but political "propoganda"). Said differently, if we do not, as a society, recognize such gifted individuals (which in America we most oft-times do not, having little to no "patrons" available, as was the case in Europe and other countries in days past), then we will eventually become "soul-less" as a culture. Yes, I truly believe this: Without our artists, we will lose a part of our humanity, a part of our collective "soul", for artists are the giver and interpretor of individual and collective archetypes and personal and cultural symbols. Therefore, I am saddened when I see a writer of substance express discouragement regarding the editorial selection process and then (often) eventually leave. These voices should be treasured and valued, and given at least occassional recognition by the Editors. It is a true shame when such a writer leaves O.S., feeling frustrated and discouraged that their work is continually ignored.

And so I do not support the cultivation of mediocrity when it comes to art. With that said, I of course realize that Open Salon is not, in general, where one would go to read a great masterwork, so we cannot fault it for that. But I, along with Padraig and others, can continue to challenge the front page editorial selections, which rarely contain anything written by a person of color, a person who is less educated, a person who may speak or write or think "differently," a person who hails from a different country (with English being their second language); voices that might challenge the status quo (including that being maintained at O.S. via organizational homeostasis); in short, I can continue to challenge the obvious lack of diversity that appears to be intentionally cultivated by the O.S. Editors for reasons that can only be related to profit and gain, for that is nearly always the case when it comes any group or forum that begins to include and imbed advertising in its every page.

I welcome any comments in the spirit of sincere and lively debate.

In this sense, in the way you write, I concede OS Cover does seem to be lacklustre and is monotone and less than open. Rtd.
OS is a blog site that is trying to exist to attract what... new bloggers, new writers, new poets, new cartoonists, new sponsors? Editors are entitled to their point of view; we bloggers are entitled to ours. Voicing opinions towards editorial control is not a new idea. Writers have complained about editors before the internet existed. It's sad to know that voicing dissent here in OS just gets you seemingly blacklisted by the editors. They [editors] created the dream that viewership may lead to something more beyond OS. They encouraged us to build audiences in reddit and digg. They encourage Facebook networking...Twitter. They show the views our posts get knowing a blogger could get disheartened when Front Covers and EP's garner more readership out side of OS. I applaud anyone who has received Ep's or Front cover status. I judge not the quality. So I write, illustrate, create and blog hoping that editorial opinion perceived as passive aggressive, my playground mentality, wanes or is unfounded. I want to be wrong in my perception....
Speaking of EP/front page picks, has anyone else noticed that the "good" Dr. Amy Tuteur MD has been back two days and has had cover EPs two days in a row? Something's rotten in Denmark ...
It would be nice to know what the criteria is that the editors are seeking in selecting front cover-worthy material. Not sure that is widely known, if at all.
I like the way you put this (Rated).

Like Cathy, I would like to know the criteria, I wish it would be explained. And, yes, in a short time I have noticed it. I took it out one day on one repetitively picked poster whose post was, well, lacking...and then I had to apologize publicly. I realized I was angry but not saying anything as I was new.

So, thank you for this civil note...it would be helpful to know why it isn't more..."open."
I'm all for diversity and recognition of real talent. I'm not as supportive of mediocrity. Sensationalism and an inside track is what spawns media crazies like Limbaugh, O'Reilly and Beck. Why should we get any respite from soulless zombies (that which is indistinguishable from a human) here on OS? The Amy Tuteurs of the world are only filling the spot kept open for them at the table by the kind of society we live in.
AT 's post attract attention bec we give it, we harp on her constantly giving it an additional boost, which maybe as some people point out is unwarranted? just a thought... if we constantly, generously studiously, viewed, rated, Digged, Redditted posts WE liked, those would agrner views, and popularity, right?

When I posted my Peacock video, anyone hardly rated - but in fact it was interesting stuff although I admit the picture quality was not that good. It tok days of hard work, missing work, patient waiting in the sun to capture those vidoes with an ordinaryu 6 megapixel camera!
Whereas some post with a simple cartoon about EP gets fifty rating!! when it was merely a cut/copy/pasted job from one of the pre-installed images on Word.
That was not the editors - surely?
Great point Rolling! How do we get that message "out there!" While I will still say it would be nice to know what goes into the EP, so it was truly "open" as it does seem to be some favoritism (as noted by many lately), we can still support one another instead of wasting energy supporting those who are receiving that kind of guaranteed access and/or, as you mention, AT (who I don't know from Adam), gets unnecessary attention, could be put towards other artistic pursuits?

How can this sytematically be changed???
Kate, you needn't have apologized, in my opinion. You spoke your mind, and the world benefits from people speaking their truth. Maybe it didn't sound palatable to some, but if your observation was accurate, perhaps it is more a case of "the truth hurts" (that oft-used adage).

I once "named names" and knew it would not end well for me, as the person in question (not AT, but someone who is on the front page weekly, and sometimes more than once weekly) is very popular. But why shouldn't the truth be recognized? These people could themselves encourage the editors to post new voices and question why they are repeatedly given access to front page exposure. But I highly doubt this occurs.

Good to hear all the voices here - However, as you all can see, few people read me, and fewer comment, which is why I write less and less on O.S. these days, and instead am turning my literary efforts toward writing on behalf of Social Justice causes related to my community and profession.
I used to get picked but haven't now for many months and am clear it has nothing to do my work. I wonder if the editors aren't as surprised as anyone else about how OS has developed.

In my view it has become a haven for many artists who for the most part have been neglected and need a place to grow. It is mostly a writers and artists site--not the political "entity" expected, and by their choices so often "encourage." If you notice a writer like David Sarota (spelling) packs them in.

For my part, I am tired about writing on topical events but realize if I am going to be "personal" it's going to have a more limited appeal. I also surmise they want to give more of the newcomers a chance so I don't argue with them about it. I frankly don't have the time or patience.

The important thing is whether I feel satisfied with my own work, and the intelligence and quality of my readers and those who make the effort to comment and rate gives me a pleasure I have not known before as a writer--and that is all I really am.

I only had one person who said they were going to send money, but then it was too complicated so I gave up and didn't want her to feel she was being manipulated. I have other things I do for money, and at least there is the possibility someone will "get it," and I will be seen for who I am.
Angie, I agree with you fully on this, and I've written an entire manuscript on the mindlessness of our time. I wish you well on your stance though I personally prefer to give it none of my attention simply because I didn't have any great expectations to begin with, and that I'm fighting a number of battles in my own country, one of which is a legal one against our department of Science and Technology. So I really understand your passion on this and support you fully, and i certainly hope that a forum can be established that really values the true noncommerical noncomformist voices out there that can truly reconnect us to our humanity, instead of us increasingly becoming a commodity--btw which our creative work has become as our inspirations are shamelessly being exploited for financial gain, in fact not even sold for a pittance and without any regard for the integrity of the greater creative process that has made it possible, but rather through the watered down facade of an OS front cover.

Power to your elbow on this one.
NEWTON - I have MISSED you - I love your new photo, and I am blessed to have felt your presence once again amid this virtual reality-space. Be well, my friend!
A,
So why don't we smart cookies
simply take over?

c'mon c'mon....i'm getting impatient...

let's take these damn issues they prattle on about
& give em a proper transpersonal interpretation..

such as abortion...
who gives a fuck? the little squirmy piece of
parasitic organic
is sent back to
the Source...

lost the chance for life on Earth..lucky little shit, eh?

So: what do you think?
A good start, or should I clean up my fucking language a bit/

so! You wrote several manuscripts about
mindlessness of our times? Eh, newton?
Well, there is mindFULLness even in
the most trivial blah blah blah
if & only if
you are ready to TURN the
conversation into an ascending
experience rather than a spiralling horizontal
or descending
one...

WE EMANATE OUR OWN UNIVERSES
and then fool ourselves into
thinking they are "out there
"objective"...that is the Fallen State

and then we create these silly issues
and try to draw attention to our little self-hoods
by being "controversial"..

controversy is good, though, if & only if
a master dialectician (like moi)
is able to step in & make sense of the controversy...what is being
rebelled against?
what is being artistically (poorly) criticized
in the edifice of illusions
we call our "cultur"
or our "society"?

Societal issues swirl down there in the breeding area...
"Gerneration"...the endless game
of procreation for the purpose of
more procreating, endlessly..

(never understood that one)

Blissy beautiful paradise is always ready to rest in,
and all this controversy is an attempt to
stir up the blissy
feelings..."love" they call it...

the opening to this world is the
fuck arena...

or...sexual congress...

a game, like everything in the breeding area...

once it's "won",
or better yet, recognized & rejected
& objectified &
seen as what it is: a remainder from our animal heritage...

we can all ascend to Heaven,
which is always available..

and!!write from THERE..

James
Newton I do not think Angie cares at all bout EP or the cover. She just happened to notice the furor going on here and responded to it, clarifying her stance.

None of us care really - we come here to be ourselves, unwind, think aloud, record our thoughts, angst about issues and go. As long as the friends we have made read us and respond, we are content. I think ... Angelique thinks the same way
I think I do care, very much, but you are right, Rolling - Not about the front page of Open Salon, but about the cultivation and then rewarding of that which does not offer true sustenance, but instead, is merely nutritionless "filler." Eventually, one actually believes that a fast-food "chemical burger" is "food for the body" (and soul), and forgets what real food, not processed and synthesized, even tasted like.

Thoughtful, provocative, insightful artistic and cultural commentary matters. I stand by this, and always will.

I have always been up for us making our own blog, where the above matters. Never had any serious takers, though, on my previous offers...
Angelique,
Write a poem, for Christ's sake, would you?
I'm in the mood for seeing what yr visionary eye is seeing
these days.
Write about the flame people...

This damn flame is so hard to keep going...
or...should i relax & realize that
it's an eternal flame?

What kindling to throw on it?
Poems from the wraith would be helpful...

When did you ever seriously offer to start a blog?
My memory doesn't remember that...

2. Wisdom is wit, saieth the Gospel. I forget which one,

Freedom is fertility, a proliferation of images,

so: get going getting some to us,

3. Symbolism = "a polymorphous

the metaphor...

the separation of the senses is mere "sensuality",

bondage to the tyranny of one partial impulse....

well, fine & good, but we obviously need a second Resurrection

It is Pentecost....

the universe

Jim, I could not have said the above any better. The wonderful Jungian psychoanalyst, Marion Woodman, often discusses this idea of this being the time of "The Mater" / "Mater" / "Mother" - In precisely the way you do here (well, almost...) - And I agree, absolutely. We live in a dissocciative world, in a culture / society that encourages body/mind/spirit "separation" and/or denial. Addiction is, of course, highly dissocciative as a process, and in nature, and ultimately, most everyone is "addicted" to their "little self" ego.

What to do, what to do...

Back to Nature, I say - Our own, at least - As in, our TRUE SELF NATURE!
And "MATTER" of course (which is the off-spring of "Mater" / "Mother"!)
Angelique,
Very well put, re matter & mater.

This is the time of ascending Mother, but...

also...

Father.
..................................................

Gender is not terribly important when speaking of
Godhead, but it IS
vital to understand the
personal God in
sexual terms, I believe.
Don't you agree?
............................................
Remember: Christ has conquered
the spiritual world. It is a
historical fact! Look it up!
..............................................
The Flesh is where the "battle" is now.
It only looks like a battle, of course: it's all an illusion....
Flesh vs. Spirit is just another dissociation we
dissociation-loving beings make,
like Body/Mind,
Ego/Big I
etc etc...
.................................................
These bodies of ours are all folded up,
abused & misused...
capable of seeing eternity in an hour
and infinity in a speck of sand,
but

too damn hurried to even try.

Hurry! Hurry! Time's a' wasting!
Time is money! Don't waste time!

We erroneously project time outside of ourselves,
just as we mistakenly put God out there too...
it's all an inside job, though..ha!

Time is relative to velocity, sez the Boss, Herr Einstein.
It is quite appropriate, i bellieve, to
analogize relativity to the human sphere...
after al, the physical world is just
a trove of symbolic reflections
of the higher levels of being,

human being
being way way up there,
but capable of so so much more...

ach

hi! when's th e nextp o e m, anyway?????

James E,
coming back to bug the shit out of yr lazy
poetic ass ...
Ah Angelique--a lover of Marion Woodman. I've been spreading the word on her for years. She is to my mind one of the most extraordinary people in the world today. You'll see quotes and dialogue I've had with her spread throughout my blog and in numerous comments. She presents a "context" that opens the door to an entirely new way of perceiving. If you hear she is speaking someplace let me know. I know she's over 80ty now and we won't be blessed by her on this plane much longer, or Robert Bly her earnstwhile friend. I love them both.
James - YES YES YES!

Ben Sen: Neglected to properly welcome you here before - please consider forgiving me...! I have had the good fortune to hear Marion speak in person, and she used to do a lot of work with the graduate school I teach at; she left us lots of tapes of her teachings while with us, to our great fortune and benefit. Bly is a friend of one of my poet-friends; did the forward to one of my friend's poetry offerings - very supportive man to other (lesser known, but brilliant) poets.

I swear once I move to the ocean in 2 weeks the poems will come shortly thereafter - Don't give up on me yet, James!
angelique,
very rare in my sphere to find a woman who says
yes not once but thrice...

you say SHE is awakening too,
over there at my "fleshy resurrection " puff-piece ...

what hampers her now , of course,
are the pernicious absurd injunctions:
1.be as good at being a man as a man is
2.don't trust him...

every girl is now indoctrinated to fear the male...
truly FEAR...for her physical safety...
murders at Yale...pretty smart things put in walls...

in the old days women didn't trust men either, but
it was :
a man cannot keep up his end of the
conversation of the heart..he will say or do something
so stupid &....well, MALE...as to ruin her illusions...

let's bring back the old days...alot of the motley buncha
fools of the heart i know will have fun
passing THAT test...
the murdering stalking lunatic male fringe is only about 3.5 %
of the male race, and they are being marked
with three sixes
as we speak...

(got that from a comic book...666)
.............................

"She needs her space..."

My God!

If that were only taken LITERALLY...

and she was given her space...

Space is hers, anyway..

(time too)

& Him?

Simply a genial Landlord...
He loves to see his daughters & sisters glow...
heat & warmth to the max...

(The Queen is currently withdrawing painfully
from her Computer Addiction,
w/o "medication"...brave gal she is..)

James
hear hear!

you got a vote from me. I won't quibble about who is picked. I don't really care. some EP/FPs I love reading, some are predicable and dull choices.

What bothers me is I am coming to suspect there are voices here at OS that are not just overlooked, but are ignored. and that just drives me crazy because it's wrong. really really wrong. some are true artists of this blog gathering. I could name one or two but it would embarrass them no doubt. so I won't.

I'd like to think it's possible that there are too few editors doing the picking. So I'll leave it at :

HIRE MORE EDITORS OS!
