"THE ECONOMIST" AD HAS RENDERED O.S. INOPERABLE

Rate: 10 Flag

Am I the only person on O.S. who is struggling with these ads from The Economist (you can't miss it - Big, bold red box eating up the screen acting as an impenetrable fortress to O.S. content)?  Yes, I have tried hitting the little 'x' on the left hand corner to close the screen - It does not close, despite my erstwhile efforts. It would seem that I am being forced to click into the OTHER little box, the one that will take me into the ad itself, (with attached marketing video, I assume - although to date I have managed to avoid clicking into this, out of sheer stubborness).

At times the ad disappears, only to resurface, like an entity being "beamed up" onto The Star Trek "Enterprise", ghostly and nearly hollow, just when I am trying to click into a post, or my own blog. This happens again and again and again, and as of this morning, I at last admit defeat, for I am not willing to click into the ad like some hapless sheep or lemming.

Those O.S. users (including myself) who expressed concerns about the various ads that were inserted into our personal blogs were ignored and the ads continued, for obvious, monetary reasons. However, I cannot imagine I am the only O.S. user who is literally unable to use this blog-site due to The Economist ad. Between this and the plethora of postings that garner only a few reads unless made Editor's Pick, O.S. appears to be disintegrating into a pile of pop-up, viral-type ads, with actual blog-content existing in between, and only as a passing thought.

Guess it is time to follow the Northern Star while kicking the O.S. dust off of my boots. See ya around, cowboys.

I understand. I use Safari and Fox Fire as my browsers and that ad shows up infrequently, but the enthusiasm here is suffocating.
it's not going to change. it is a business, but the efforts to make it a community reflect well on those who believe it, don't you think?
I use IE7 & am not about to change to IE8. I find if I just reload the page it usually disappears, but it sure is annoying!
When you position the cursor over the X, it just has an arrow. When you move it right over "Close and enter Salon", it turns to a finger. Click here and the ad will disappear. You're right...the X doesn't work. Frustrating, I know. Hopefully it pays for our editors!!!
It's a huge, infuriating barrier, I agree. I wouldn't mind so much if it popped up ONCE and then disappeared. But it follows us around. I never wanted the Economist and now I REALLY don't. I want it and Joe Lieberman exiled permanently!
Thanks to all who commented this far. Ralph, thank you so much for the pointer regarding the box - I will give it a try, but I am sure my O.S. days are numbered...That ol' North Star is calling!
i don't know what firefox is saving me from, it appears.

complaining about a free service seems strange, to me. as you say, if you don't like it, go elsewhere.

capitalism sends its loathsome tentacles everywhere, but until we raise the green flag, let's allow the owners to make a living, even prosper.
Al, this ad has rendered the O.S. blog inoperable, as in, unusable. Not sure if you are a sailor (looking at your photo there) but I am and if we were talking about something that was added to an engine that rendered it inoperable, or a winch, or what-have-you, I think that this would be cause for concern. With Ralph's helpful comment, it may be that I need not "go elsewhere"; I happen to have made an investment of time and creative energy at O.S. and I am someone who believes in the value of speaking up and pointing out "bad gadgetry," versus slinking off the boat and finding a new one.
Oh, these aggressive ad software programs, when will they leave us ALONE? Rated.
Nope, Ralph - The whole system freezes when I click in the manner you mention - The Economist is victorious. I admit defeat.
I've had some trouble. What I do is not even try to close the ad, I let the ad load and then I just click out of the site, and then re-enter. That seems to work fine.
A-FUCKING-MEN

It jams my shit up all day long ... I finally just gave up last week. I mean every 30 damn seconds - and if I click something just as it is coming up I have to shut EVERYTHING down and start over!!! AAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!

I'm ok with ads - but just once please ... not repeatedlynw/ the pop-up thingy!!!
We should get ad free OS premier for free if we've posted over so many blogs and had so many views. It could be a reward for bringing ad revenue right in the big fat middle of our brilliant work.

Attica! Attica!
Yes, it does appear and ever since it started I cant seem to stay signed on to OS for even an hour, soon as the computer shuts down it logs me out. If you ignore the box ans try to sign in, it gets stuck and you can't. It irritates and it is aggressive, made me not want to read the ET again.

Good customer relation demands you offer them a choice, it is bad strategy to force 'feed'. Others have written about this too a few weeks back.
Yes, Rolling and Irritated Mother - Your experience with this ad and the frustrations posed by its existence (to put it mildly) mirror mine exactly. I figured I wasn't the only one. It has become nearly impossible to use O.S. Perhaps that is the point - To weed out those who are not willing to tolerate aggressive, pop-up ads; make room for the new blood here, weed things out - like a great forest fire.

Burn, Baby, Burn!

And thank you to all else who have commented thus far - I figured I was not alone, and that helps, just a tad (I admit...!)
Yes, it has happened to me too. Irritating. Then it stopped. Hasn't happened in awhile.

By the way, you are forbidden to leave OS. By me.
What happened to all your 'go with the tao' attitude?
Don't be so stubborn. Flow through it.
I usually go to someone's blog, then sign in there, away from
Home Page.

Won't you get the urge to write another g-damn poem soon?
