Happy Birthday! You are 50 and Unemployed!

Rate: 6 Flag

My husband is practically despondent because tomorrow is his 50th birthday. This isn't about vanity or the fear of getting old. Along with the well wishes of friends and the cards with the bad jokes comes a very real fear about our family's future. He was laid off at the end of last August -- which means at midnight tonight he will officially be fifty-years-old and unemployed.

Even though age discrimination is against the law, it appears to be alive and well, and living in the online job applications - most of which contain certain questions (requiring mandatory responses) that are thinly veiled ways to ascertain the age of the applicant.  If my husband is fortunate enough to land a face-to-face interview, then what happens? He's in good shape, but it's obvious that he isn't thirty-years-old.

There is nothing my husband can do about his age, so tomorrow we will celebrate with friends and family. Then he will return to the job hunt on Monday, just like he has done for the past ten months.

I am sorry that has happened to him and to you and your family. I hope he finds work soon.
Lulu & Dorinda - Thank you both for stopping by and for your kind words.
Happy birthday to your husband. Like him I am unemployed (5 months) and will be 58 in 2 months. Nothing emasculates you more than the loneliness and helplessness of unemployment at our age. My thoughts are with you and your husband. (By the way unemployment and being home every day is a great opportunity to act like you did 25 years ago--it helps with his sense of manhood too!)
God Bless him. Sending good work wishes his way!!
Walter, my thoughts are with you, too. Your observations are right on target. As a matter of fact, you sound just like my husband. It's a terrible shame that so many intelligent, creative, experienced people have been marginalized.
Deborah, thank you so much! .
oh, sweetheart, i know all about this and it sucks. i hope he had a lovely birthday and celebrated the hell out of this new decade of life. the economy is fucked, the employers have their pick of eager young bodies, but they are idiots for not hiring people with real experience, in work and in life. that's all that i can think to share, and i'm so freaking sorry that he's in this position, is to emphasize that above all, the experience and ability to handle any situation.

you both are in my heart and i pray that something works out soon. love love lvoe and gratitude
Theo, thank you so much for stopping by and offering your kind and heartfelt words of encouragement.
