"The Foolhardiness of Playing with Firearms" - July 8, 1932

Rate: 3 Flag

A brief  letter of advice and accompanying newspaper clipping sent from my grandfather to my eighteen-year-old father who had moved to Los Angeles to work in the family business.

Letter from Grumpy to dad

newspaper clipping

As far as I know, dad never did play with firearms. Although he had to use them for a time when he was a soldier during WWII.

Newspaper writing was better in those days, too.
Certainly more colorful, that's for sure! Tally-ho!
Fatherly admonition still relevent today. Although what kind of family has a firing range in their house!!!!??
The idea of having a basement range is just a bit bizarre, but not much more than a basement bowling alley. When my mother went to college, she boarded with a wealthy family who had 2 lanes in their basement.

Yes, newspaper writing was a bit more colorful back then.
Thanks, Nelly. I love how typed letters look. Plus, that's good advice from your grandfather. I think it's kinda humorous that he sent that to your father.

My grandmother used to cut out newspaper articles and send them to me. Do parents now send website links to their grown-up children? I wonder.
Psychobabble - It really was another era -- instead of bowling alleys and firing ranges, today the idle rich have home theaters, PS3 and wii gaming systems in their basements. I think things have improved somewhat;-). Without trying to sound cruel, the incident seemed a bit like natural selection....
Gwendolyn - my grandfather is supposed to have had a dry sense of humor, and it shows in this case. I've had so much fun reading these old letters that my father and mother kept forever. The language, the stories, "reading between the lines". My mother (who is probably older than your grandmother) to this day clips articles from the newspaper and magazines for my 15-year-old son to read. He's thinks it is very strange. But then again he also thinks it's weird when I email links to him;-)

Thanks for stopping by. Enjoyed reading your guest blogger!
