As far as I know, dad never did play with firearms. Although he had to use them for a time when he was a soldier during WWII.

Yes, newspaper writing was a bit more colorful back then.
My grandmother used to cut out newspaper articles and send them to me. Do parents now send website links to their grown-up children? I wonder.
