Lire lessons from Karate Kid
My daughter is in love with Jaden Smith. Who could blame her, he looks like his father, Will. She fell in love with the little boy in "Pursuit of Happiness" and now wants to marry the boy in Karate Kid. We have seen the earlier versions of Karate Kid, but there something superbly different about this one. There are so many more cultural layers and depths and my 12 year old has adores it. She saw it about 3 times in the movie theatre with her dad, and I've lost count, now that it is out in DVD.
When we were about to rent the DVD, since I hadn't seen it yet, she said it will blow my head off. It is a good movie, and any parent loves one that gives these life lessons:
* Making the most with what you have. This Karate Kid's mother is transfered from Detroit to China, cultural and language barriers are addressed, but bullying is universal.
* Overcoming fear. This is the main theme, of course. It not only shows Jackie Chan's character teaching the boy, it shows how the boy also teaches Jackie Chan's character, about getting up when life knocks you down, about facing fear. about not giving up. There's a great exchange between teacher and student, after he has been injured in the tournament, about not wanting to be afraid any more, and going out there and facing his fears.
* Discipline and hard work pays off. Jadien Smith's character is attracted to a Chinese girl who gifted in the violin. She is preparing for a big audition. Their practice and discipline toward their goals are parallel in the story line.

* Respect. I love the sequence of taking the jacket of and putting it on, especially when he mother says, with a smile "Dre, " and then sternly "Pick up your jacket!"
*Focus. How to stay peaceful when facing a crowd and an adversary. To stay peaceful and without anxiety. This is a very important lesson and particularly needed in our household.
* Fair play and honor. Just like the older version Karate Kid goes up against a contender that has been instructed by a teacher that drives his students through anger instead of focus and peace.
What makes this new one different is the supremely good acting of Jaden Smith, Jackie Chan and the rival/bully. The cinematography is wonderful, and Jackie Chan's choreography makes the stunts believable and mind blowing especially the final winning kick.
