ABOUT THE OPEN CALL:

I don’t know if I’m officially allowed to issue an open call, but I saw a poetry contest in our newspaper today that benefits The Bridge, a wonderful non-profit dedicated to helping the homeless in our city.

This poetry contest is a fundraiser for The Bridge; each entry costs $20.

My husband and I would like to sponsor an Open Call for poems on the topics of Homelessness or Humanitarianism. We will pay (with author permission) the entry fees for the top five highest-rated poems (maybe more if business goes well this month!).

This way, my husband and I donate $100 to The Bridge, OS gets to enjoy the talents and compassion of excellent poets, and we all lift some good thoughts, and perhaps a prayer or two, on behalf of both people without homes, and the good people dedicated to helping them.

I’ll put official contest rules and details below, as well as a link if you’d like to bypass this contest and enter on your own.

Here are the Open Call rules if you’d like to enter:

*Please use the words “BRIDGE POEM” in your TITLE when you upload.  (You can put your actual title in the post itself; I think titling these posts BRIDGE POEM is my only surefire way of finding all the entries.)

*Please help me out by e-mailing me the link to your poem!

*Please submit your poem by Sunday, April 26th.  That way I can notify winners Monday and get the information I need to enter the poem.

*Please make sure your topic is Homelessness or Humanitarianism.

*Please make sure your poem is NO LONGER than 50 lines.  This is the official contest rule.

*Please look back to this post – I will be uploading links to all the entries.  (Perhaps I’ll even learn to imbed a link!  Miracles happen!)

*If you win the OS open call, I'm going to need your actual name, address, e-mail address, phone number, and short bio to enter your poem.  Winners will be published on The Bridge website, and the top winners receive cash prizes from the contest sponsor.

That’s it!  If I’ve committed some protocol breach, I’m sure someone will let me know.  Otherwise, I’m very excited to read the entries.

I'm hectoring some poetry people right now.
the name is barry, not hector
If I lose can I at least get a sandwich dropped off under the I-45 overpass?
I'll mention it to some of the real poets here. Also may PM you with a couple of names that you could invite personally. Anything for a good cause.

Monte
Harry, you down near Good Latimer? I thought they turned all that into a dog park, which has its own special irony.
Actually, I meet Mrs. Michaels at the dog park and I race Puppy Monster for milkbones. Got three today!!
What a great cause and a wonderful way to include OS! I'm sure you will receive plenty of submissions and I look forward to reading them. I'm not much of a poet myself but the well of talent here runs deep. Thanks to you and your husband for your generosity! Rated.
what a very cool thing you're doing here. the last poem i posted in OS was so apalling i deleted it the next day, but this is a good enough cause i think i'll try getting back on the horse so to speak.
oh this is lovely. thank you for your generosity financially and of spirit. not a poet but can't wait to read the entries. love lov elove
Thank you for this Annette! I have added the link to my favs and have tons of poetry to sift through. :)
What a lovely thing to do, Annette! I promise I will think of something to write and post it shortly. Today is a real bear for me, but I will make the time for this. Thank you, dear!
What a fantastic idea! For a great cause--and it has the potential to put a poem to the cover of OS, which is something I would really, really LOVE to see happen.
consider me hectored

I'm not a poet but think this is a great cause.
If you're not a poet, you can still be a huge help just by reading the poems above and rating the ones that speak to you. The ones posted so far are quite good.
Thanks for doing this. I hope that it will raise awareness and consciousness. My humble submission is Government Housing.
Here's one I wrote before, about human rights http://open.salon.com/blog/marcelleqb/2008/12/02/struggle_follows_independence

It doesn't format properly in html, so I'm going to type it up (and probably edit it) and then post a link to my LJ site.
Tremendous idea. I will email you something soon.
Well, I have my own twist on the subject of homelessness. I'm sure that comes as a big surprise:

Homeless ain't what it use to be
.
I missed this so I'll get to work now! This will bump it back on the feed and maybe someone like me who's been in a time warp will see it and get busy too.

Thanks! I'm so glad poetry is cool!
