Cartouche started it.
She wrote a funny and hugely-popular piece asking people to create an OS slogan. NoisyNora suggested this: “You can sign out any time you like… but you can never leave…”
This echo of “Hotel California” gave me an earworm, and I finally decided to make the best of things and rewrite the song as an ode to OS.
So here it is – inspired by Nora and a bit of Chardonnay – and offered with profound apologies to Don Henley:

OS World of Writers
On the internet highway,
Cordless mouse in my hand,
Bored with Twitter and Facebook,
I had some thoughts to expand.
Then I clicked on a hot link
For a new blogging site.
My fingers trembled and my mind went wild;
I would be writing all night.
Then I got my first comments,
And a handful of rates
And I was reading other posts
And enjoying some lively debates.
And I met some Fab artists
And a cake-loving troll.
There was no Verbal Remedy
For this new hold on my soul…
Welcome to the OS World of Writers
Post your poems and peeves
(post your poems and peeves)
Say what you believe
They’re bloggin’ it up in the OS World of Writers
All your hopes and fears…
(All your hopes and fears)
Come expose them here…
That horse is definitely twisted;
Tequila brings the wit;
There's a fun-loving sheepdog;
Dr. Amy is causing a snit.
Sandra writes scary fiction;
Persephone weaves magic songs.
Jodi gives us the saga
Of a tan gone terribly wrong.
Mommy, what’s for dinner?
"Kids, it’s sandwich night!
Mother’s working on a funny post
And the rhythm has got to be right."
Provocative titles seduce their willing prey…
Keep you up till all hours of the night
Wondering what they’ll say…
Welcome to the OS World of Writers
It’s a literate place…
(It’s a literate place)
Full of fun and grace…
They’re bloggin’ it up in the OS World of Writers
Bring your deviant charms...
(Bring your deviant charms)
You'll find open arms!
Liberals on the ceiling,
Politics and advice…
Cartouche said,
“We are all just prisoners here
Of our own writing vice.”
And in the Joan/Kerry chambers
They blogwhored wild and free.
Their writing sparkled with brilliance and heart,
But they just can’t get an EP!
Last thing I remember
I was heading off to bed.
It was four in the morning
I was bleary eyed, feeling half dead…
Come back, said the cover,
Here’s a post that you won’t believe!
You can sign out any time you like…
But you will never leave…
If you’ve come this far – and ESPECIALLY if you’ve sung along (in which case, I’m in your fan club) – what about making the recent OS parties an annual event and forming an Open Salon band?
Dave Barry is in a band called Rock Bottom Remainders, along with Matt Groening, Stephen King, and Amy Tan. I feel certain we have the talent here to create music that would be appreciated by fellow OSers (once they’ve had enough cake and Chardonnay).
What would we call this band? And any other suggestions for song covers?
ADDENDUM:
Helen O'Reilly - whose lyric genius spilled forth in under 10 minutes - not that I'm resentful about that just because I spent an embarrassing three hours on MY song - anyway, Helen posted a new ode to OS, sung to Strangers in the Night - you'll love it!

Band name: The Posters?
The Bloggers?
Blogger's Addiction (Jane's Addiction)?
"Consider Me Gone" by Sting
There were rooms of forgiveness
In the house that we share
Bu the space has been emptied
Of whatever was there
There were cupboards of patience
There were shelf-loads of care
But whoever came calling
Found nobody there
After today, consider me gone
Roses have thorns and shining waters mud
And cancer lurks deep in the sweetest bud
Clouds and eclipses stain the moon and sun
And history reeks of the wrongs we have done
After today, consider me gone
I've spent too many years at war with myself
The doctor has told me it's no good for my health
To search for perfection is all very well
But to look for heaven is to live here in hell
After today, consider me gone...

Thanks Cartouche – this was fun, though I’ve spent an embarrassing amount of time on it. Verbal, your name works REALLY well for this kind of writing.
Thanks Mr. Mustard, JK and Buffy! Ablonde – also like The Posters. Pretty apt song for the recent drama Kindofblue.
Writers in the sky… That’s an awesome suggestion for a song cover. MJ – especially after our comments on your Meatloaf post – that is HILARIOUS. We should start a whole comment string on what we mean by “But I won’t do that.”
Strangers in the night, exchanging postings,
Writing through the night, exchanging boastings,
We’d be sharing rants, before the night was through.
Something in your post was so provoking,
I just knew that you had to be toking.
Somewhere in my heart I knew I’d outdo you.
Strangers in the night, pathetic people, we were
Strangers in the night! Up to the moment
When we posted on the O. Little did we know
Fame of sorts would come our way,
A “favorite,” ranking anyway . . .
And
Ever since that night,
We’ve been together,
Posting on the O
Stuck here forever,
It’s a sorry sight,
We're strangers in the night!
(Awesome work - very very funny - turn it into a post and I'll link it! I don't know how to embed but I do know how to link!)
Awesome song!!! Really fun and captures the essence of the playground of diversity and inspiration we share here.
Rated for "sandwich night!"
Love it.... Band name....easy....
THE BLOGWHORES!
MUST be "Bloghat"!!!
(thumbified for mentioning me because I enjoy validation through inclusion)
I love Three Blog Night and Bloghat! Can't wait to hear "Mama Told Me Not to Blog" and "I Just Want to Write Blogs to You"
Mamoore, you can be Sheila E (remember her?). You'd definitely have to play drums and sing lead on Mama told me not to blog.... (another good one Nora!).
We definitely have a good playlist started. Maybe we can revise "Twist and Shout" into Blog it up baby now! (Blog it up baby...) Rant and shout! (Rant and shout...) C'mon c'mon c'mon blog it baby now! (Blog it up baby...) C'mon and work that angst out! (Work that angst out...)
We could get the whole Ferris Bueller line dance going at the party. Visions of greatness!
"I'm offering you a chance to star in biggest musical Broadway's seen in twenty years and you say: 'Allentown'?"
Thanks for you warm welcome. I look forward to learning more about you.
Sorry, I'm a bit late to the party on this one, but, OMG! What an absolute HOOT! Your lyrics encompass the general personalities and tone that I have sensed in just over 48 hours. Absolutely, hilariously masterful! --rated--
Site bird? OS-trich?
Here is my feeble song entry. KISS was BIG when my sons were teenagers and every one, and I mean every one, of their songs was blasted throughout the house on a fairly consistent basis. With that background: To the tune of "Rock and Roll All Night"
You show us everything you've got
You keep on bloggin' and the site gets hot
You drive us wild, we'll drive you crazy
You say OS makes you head spin
The party's just begun, we'll let you in
You drive us wild, we'll drive you crazy
You keep on bloggin', you keep on bloggin'
I wanna write and blog and roll all nite and comment every day
I wanna write and blog and roll all nite and comment every day
I wanna write and blog and roll all nite and comment every day
I wanna write and blog and roll all nite and comment every day
You keep on saying you'll be here for a while
You're writin' fancy and we like your style
You drive us wild, we'll drive you crazy
You show us everything you've got
Baby, baby that's quite a lot
You drive us wild, we'll drive you crazy
You keep on bloggin', you keep on bloggin'
I wanna write and blog and roll all nite and comment every day
I wanna write and blog and roll all nite and comment every day
I wanna write and blog and roll all nite and comment every day
I wanna write and blog and roll all nite and comment every day
I wanna write and blog and roll all nite and comment every day
I wanna write and blog and roll all nite and comment every day

So what do you think of the place so far? I'm here so much I'm going to have to go into detox.
