On Monday, Jim D. Adkisson pled guilty to two counts of 1st degree murder. In July of last year, Adkisson entered a Tennessee Unitarian Universalist Church and began massacring 'chicken shit liberals' until brave people jumped and stopped him.
Now I know he's an angry self-loathing nutjob who hated Christians and Liberals. Yet, he was an avid reader of conservative pundits like Hannity, Limbaugh, Coulter, and O'Reilly. These pundits are well known for their merciless hectoring against liberals and leftists. Every night, they perpetuate the myth that 'real America' is under attack and, like termites in the support beams, liberals, immigrants and non-believers are destroying this country.
I don't blame these pundits for Adkisson's actions, but I do blame them for creating the atmosphere that inspired it. Adkissons soused himself with angry print and visual media that confirmed his delusion that his personal failings and shortcomings are part of a grander conspiracy to destroy his birthright to prosperity.
The sad fact, we will see more Adkisson's in the future. This time, it may be more organized and directed. With perceived abomination of a black liberal president and a failing economy, some frustrated people will be seduced by extreme Christian right and white supremacist leaders’. With the country totally lost to the liberals, abortionists and homesexualists, would taking arms against this menace be treason or right after Thomas Paine’s own heart?
And what will those pundits say when the next Alfred P. Murrah building explodes? Will they say they never meant anyone to take them seriously when they said opponents of Bush’s polices should be tried for treason and executed, or that gays are America’s greatest national security threat, or that taxes are a form of terrorism? They must be misunderstood. They have a right to their free speech, they also have the responsibility to own up the vitriol that inspires violence.
This won’t be any where near the kind of terrorism witnessed in Pakistan and Iraq, but it will resemble patterns from the past. The next batch of McVeigh’s and Adkisson will look to the TV and radio for their marching orders.
And, guaranteed, they won’t be readers of Mother Jones.

The plain truth is that Cheney, Hannity and Limbaugh et al, like McCarthy before them, are the real terrorists.
