For those of us shivering, here is a breath of warmth and life.

While I'm hunkered down in the mountains, my sister in South Florida sent me this email, along with a link of photos and a few videos from the state parks that have boardwalks through the still-wild wetland preserves in her area, around the W. Palm Beach. I embedded the slide show, but I recommend using her link to go the Flickr site if you want to see them in higher resolution.  The Flickr slide show has credits, and many have notes and allow comments.

This evening we got to enjoy one of the few great south Florida experiences during the winter: walking the wetlands boardwalks when all the birds have congregated to court, mate, nest, birth, and nurture their young.  Right now, the Great Blue Herons have courted and are nesting.  The cormorants have given birth; you can see their young with a good set of binoculars. The anhingas are beginning to court. And the more rare sightings of wood storks and roseate spoonbills are becoming an almost daily event.  One photographer saw a bald eagle this weekend (a rare sight here due to loss of habitat and historic use of DDT) There are both professional and amateur photographers filming at first light and at sunset.  Here is a great link to see some of their photos.  It is the next best thing to being there, and I wanted to share it:

P.S. There are lots of photos, some great, some not so great, but patience will reward you.

All I did here was copy and paste, but the thought was there.
Thanks! I will watch these in a bit and remember when I was there watching.
Big thanks, Leslie! That was fantastic. I've been down here almost 29 years and still there is so much I haven't seen. Some of those birds are like old friends while others I don't think I've ever seen before. The is a very small mangrove island near my house where the birds come in to roost each night. There are many islands in the river, but they chose this one for some reason. Safety in numbers. Most of the other islands hardly have any nests. Anyway, if you get there just before dark, there are at least two dozen species that fly in from all over. Nearly every branch on the tiny island has a nest resting on it and most of the nests have a clutch in them of one sort of bird or another. If you ever get down this way again, I'd love to show it to you. It's totally incredible.
Mission and Michael, I knew you would like this. Michael, I am missing Florida like crazy right now, so enjoy your island for me til I get back down there.
This is a beautiful slide show, thanks for sharing Ardee. I didn't need patience to view it--it worked beautifully.
Oh, this was wooonderful! Thanks much for the post!
Glad you all enjoyed them! Did you get very far in the slide show? There's a video with the audio on, the sound of chirping birds and running water - aaaaaaaaahhhhhh!
I lived in FL for 25 years and there is much natural wonder to enjoy in that party of the country. Still, I think I prefer these mountains.
