Lila Downs - Shake Away

Rate: 4 Flag

I remember the first time I heard Lila Downs on the radio, (pre Frida soundtrack) singing La Llorona and I had to stop the car because I was mesmerized by what I was hearing.  I had never had to stop the car for a song before! I was lucky enough to get to see her in concert once and it truly was a  religious experience.

In case  you don't know her the Rolling Stone review says this:

"This Oaxaca-born, Minnesota-raised singer dips into Mexican, American and other roots traditions on her eighth album, injecting styles from brassy banda to Scottish folk into the set; she even covers Lucinda Williams' wistful "I Envy the Wind" in English and Spanish. The mélange doesn't always work, but when everything clicks, as on duets with Rubén Albarrán ("Perro Negro") and Mercedes Sosa ("Tierra de Luz"), the results are as daring as anything by Tom Waits."

Here is her new single "Shake Away"

Here is the song that made me stop the car

Oh, I really like this music, and it's the sort of thing I never would have found on my own. Thank you!
Allie, Lila is super cool and I would say a trip (cause she sings in different voices), hope you enjoy her
Music might be the one thing that can bring the world together. There is nothing quite like that "I have to stop the car right now and listen to this" moment, is there? I'm looking forward to the occasional writing I hope you'll interleave with reading. Best wishes...
I bet I could play the bongos.
Freaky, you would be the best bongo player evah!
Anyone compared to Tom Waits deserves a listen. I'm YouTubing right now, and realize I have heard her before, and do love her work. Thanks for bringing her back to the light of my day.
I adore her...I still love "La Linea" (the song) best of all.
It's really haunting.
