Herb Garden - Purchase and repotting

Rate: 16 Flag

This past Friday was a beautiful, perfect day so I decided to leave work a couple of hours early so I could get to a local nursery and pick out some of the herbs I was going to plant this weekend.   I ended up at a nursery still in a semi rural area though development has certainly been ratcheting up around here in the last few years and I am sure it will not remain semi rural for long.

Here are pics of the nursery:

I had printed out all the comments on my last post where OS’ers gave me wonderful advice on growing herbs, I also looked at some videos on line that were about this most basic of gardening techniques.  I had read the comments and wrote down some of the advice on notecards and took them with me.

I admit to being a bit overwhelmed with all the gorgeousness of the plants and flowers and I wanted to take everything home.  However, I have bought pretty plants with purple and orange and blue flowers in the past and they have all died so I reminded myself I was here only for herbs.   At a couple of points though I wanted to give up on the entire project because there were so many choices and I felt like I didn’t know what I was doing.

There were many different kinds of each herb, many kinds of thyme in particular.  There were herb pots for sale but they had no names so I didn’t know what kind of herbs were in the pot so I went with my original plan which is to buy herbs with names and keep the names close.   I ended up getting these: cilantro, (my favorite), basil, blue rosemary, rosemary spice island, creeping lemon thyme and golden lemon thyme, curry (b/c it smelled delicious!), herb salvia which is golden sage (I hope this is the edible kind but am not sure, it’s very pretty though) and then I also added green okra and green bell pepper plants.

Since I needed so many pots I went to a supercenter to buy them, the fertilizer and the potting soil.  All in all, I spent about $75 on everything.

My nieces and I got up on Sunday ready to do some gardening and it was cold!, it was about 60 degrees which is why you see them in jackets in the picture!

Yes I let my nieces play in the mud afterward which is why you see mud on her dress.  (I washed everything though before their parents came home)

I want to thank everyone again who gave me advice on this, I really appreciated all of it.

Wow, I think you just got addicted to nurseries. Man, they are the best. Great job.
I love to play in the dirt too, Ariana....so I know your nieces got a kick out of it! Good job.....I planted tomatoes and bell peppers this past weekend....can't wait for the harvest. Rated!
Hooray for the herbs! I have great admiration for people who grow things - good luck!
I forgot to say these things: each pot got plant food and fertilizer, basil got the biggest pot per OS'ers advice, and I went with pots instead of in the ground b/c there are too many cats that like my yard and I can't find a good non damaging way to keep them out.
I am not going to use cayenne and this mixture I found online of vinegar and ammonia didnt really work so the garden will be in pots.

But i may get a baker's rack to put outside if all goes well and put them on that.
I think a baker's rack would be perfect sine it'll allow air and sunlight to get in.

Keeping them in containers is a great idea since, just like you said, cats will always be cats and the herbs might disappear and when you look at the cats they'll shrug their shoulders and go back to sleep.

I'd monitor the herbs daily and read directions online on how to care for them.

And think of all the wonderful foods you can make with the herbs, too!
Congratulations - sounds like you are off to a great start. I look forward to following your progress. I hope to repeat my success with a tomato plant and try a few herbs as well. I don't feel ready to do a garden plot yet, but may try to grow a few vegetables mixed in with some of my flowerbeds. I have critter problems too. Not the cats so much as bunnies that eat any new shoots of anything down to a nub and squirrels that dig up thee bulbs. I heard that cayenne sprays can be successful. If anyone out there knows anything else, I'd love to hear!
Glad for you and your nieces to have launched this project together!
Also - ditto on getting to a nursery and wanting to buy everything because it all looks so pretty. Kudos to you for reigning yourself in!
Great photographic herbal update. Thanks for sharing your nursery outing with your nieces.
thanks for the support! it is appreciated
it sounds like you made some good herb selections ariana. the main thing now is too make sure you don't over-water or under-water, and also that you've got them in a place where they're getting enough sun. from half a day to a full day is what they'll need, bearing in mind of course that the more sun they get the more water they'll need. and, this may sound silly, but what's a baker's rack?
i cant put a picture in comments but a bakers rack is a shelf unit usually but not always made out of metal, it's for inside and I have one in my kitchen but some people use them outside for plants, i saw some used ones on craigslist already for $50.
ok, i'm going to try to get some sleep but apparently they already looked dry today and I just watered them sunday so i need to be more on top of this
I love your nursery!!! Great pictures, great way to get the kids involved - and those herbs will fill the air with some great aromas! Very nice. :)
Ariana, Don't tell me about how good your weather is when I can do nothing but turn soil and plant peas. We had snow here last week and pretty cold nights and you are calling 60 cold. That's just mean. And onecorgilover shame on you too. Cruel.
Despite your cruelty I thought I would point out that Salvia is a VERY big family including some that people are getting high on. Sage is also a very loosely used term in the plant world. You really might want to double check your variety (does it have the latin name on the tag?) before eating any of it. (or smoking I guess I should add)

Tijo, I came over tho i was looking for summer sandals on Zappo's b/c my email told me I had a comment. Little did i know what an IMPORTANT comment this would be. OMG, I thought the sage was too pretty to eat.......I kept the name badge so tomorrow I will see but I think you are probably right, it is not sage like the herb that you add to food but now i understand it has other usages. I owe you one; even tho i still remember you refused to talk to me about a producer credit on the Trig movie you are making; remember that?

I appreciate your comments for real for real

P.S. I just thought of something, they can't sell it if it's for rolling? i am now confused. I am not knowledgeable on pot issues, :)

And screamin mama thank you, I had to include the kids b/c no way was i doing this on my own.
they are attempting to outlaw it in a few places but it's somewhat new to the drug scene.
Such amazing variety on OS! The green growing things pictures are most welcome.
Salvia can mess you up. Never use it alone. It is especially potent if smoked. monkey fingered.
Yay! I've not been around for a while, but your garden is going to be so beautiful, your house so fragrant, and your food so yummy. Don't get all crazy with the salvia :). Also, curry plants smell yummy and make food taste amazing, but they're pretty high-maintenance, so give it lots of water and light. Rated!
I'm with Stella on this one. I bet it smells fresh in there! Great post, Ariana!
Just found this. It was very calming to me...
