This past Friday was a beautiful, perfect day so I decided to leave work a couple of hours early so I could get to a local nursery and pick out some of the herbs I was going to plant this weekend. I ended up at a nursery still in a semi rural area though development has certainly been ratcheting up around here in the last few years and I am sure it will not remain semi rural for long.
Here are pics of the nursery:

I had printed out all the comments on my last post where OS’ers gave me wonderful advice on growing herbs, I also looked at some videos on line that were about this most basic of gardening techniques. I had read the comments and wrote down some of the advice on notecards and took them with me.
I admit to being a bit overwhelmed with all the gorgeousness of the plants and flowers and I wanted to take everything home. However, I have bought pretty plants with purple and orange and blue flowers in the past and they have all died so I reminded myself I was here only for herbs. At a couple of points though I wanted to give up on the entire project because there were so many choices and I felt like I didn’t know what I was doing.
There were many different kinds of each herb, many kinds of thyme in particular. There were herb pots for sale but they had no names so I didn’t know what kind of herbs were in the pot so I went with my original plan which is to buy herbs with names and keep the names close. I ended up getting these: cilantro, (my favorite), basil, blue rosemary, rosemary spice island, creeping lemon thyme and golden lemon thyme, curry (b/c it smelled delicious!), herb salvia which is golden sage (I hope this is the edible kind but am not sure, it’s very pretty though) and then I also added green okra and green bell pepper plants.
Since I needed so many pots I went to a supercenter to buy them, the fertilizer and the potting soil. All in all, I spent about $75 on everything.
My nieces and I got up on Sunday ready to do some gardening and it was cold!, it was about 60 degrees which is why you see them in jackets in the picture!

Yes I let my nieces play in the mud afterward which is why you see mud on her dress. (I washed everything though before their parents came home)
I want to thank everyone again who gave me advice on this, I really appreciated all of it.

I am not going to use cayenne and this mixture I found online of vinegar and ammonia didnt really work so the garden will be in pots.
But i may get a baker's rack to put outside if all goes well and put them on that.
Keeping them in containers is a great idea since, just like you said, cats will always be cats and the herbs might disappear and when you look at the cats they'll shrug their shoulders and go back to sleep.
I'd monitor the herbs daily and read directions online on how to care for them.
And think of all the wonderful foods you can make with the herbs, too!
Glad for you and your nieces to have launched this project together!
Also - ditto on getting to a nursery and wanting to buy everything because it all looks so pretty. Kudos to you for reigning yourself in!
