Dear President Obama,
I listened attentively to your recent press conference regarding the oil crisis. In particular, I keep hearing your words resonate in my mind that on the very first day of the crisis, you convened a high level meeting in the Oval Office. In God’s name, what did you set out to do as a result of that meeting?
The question that should have been asked is how can this spill (now there is the understatement of the millennium) be stopped as quickly as possible. Calling to mind that our nation is blessed with some of the greatest minds in the world, you should have assumed full responsibility to end this tragedy as soon as possible. If we can put men on the moon - repeatedly - are you suggesting that we do not possess the mental and intellectual capacity to effectively and immediately find some means to have stopped this tragedy within a few days, if not a few hours. I think not!
Deferring to British Petroleum (BP) and the others directly involved in this outrage to our common wealth is outrageous. These are the same corporate thinkers who probably see this tragedy as the cost of doing business. Capitalism is a beautiful construct, but corporations are not a necessarily manifestation of capitalism, they often are often a perversion of that system. Did you not learn anything from the Wall Street debacle? Corporations and governmental regulatory entities that had everything but the common good in mind should not be allowed to participate in the resolution of the tragedies they create.
Sure ask for their input, but do not defer to them to act, this is tantamount to allowing the proverbial foxes to guard the chicken-coup.I hope someone in your ineffective Oval Office meeting had the courage to ask how this spill could be stopped immediately. This would include our best scientist, civilian and military minds, and would have the courage to accept help from or friends throughout the world.
Could the more than three miles of pipe, and the accompanying earth’s crust, extending from the source of the leak down through the ocean floor to the source of the oil have been immediately imploded, collapsed or compressed? Hey, even a novice like me sees the potential efficacy of collapsing more than three miles of the earth’s crust as potentially an effective alternative. When you said that we (you the government and therefore by extension, we the people) do not possess the expertise of BP and the others directly involved in this defiling of our planet as a result of this incident, you shook my confidence in you to the core.
Stop worry about the self-serving interests of the few, and focus on the needs of the many whose lives are being forever damaged and, in many cases destroyed, beyond repair. Stop being the politician we elected, and instead be the leader we elected. Take charge and the limitless ingenuity of our great nation will rush to your side. Be the President that destiny has uniquely prepared you to be.
Trust and hope in your leadership has not been extinguished, but for many of us the flame is growing very, very dim.
