Julie Luke

The Low-down

Julie Luke’s art work consists of rhythmic details and whimsical elements that work together to create her own unique voice. Her fascination with myth, birds, sea life and female iconic symbols embody a world of magic and illusion. Luke explores personal growth and identity, overcoming a tumultuous past of poverty and adversity. A sense of balance arises amid chaos and sweeps the viewer into a world of endless possibilities.

 The Interview

S~ “What is your most dominant characteristic?”

Luke- "I have a very strong spirit."

S~ “Where would you most like to live?”

Luke- "I would love to live in Portugal."

S~ “Who would you say are your heroes and inspirations?”

Luke- "I don’t have a lot of heroes. I tend to have a lot of cultural and wildlife admiration. Just life in general, but My father Tom Johnston, myself, and my husband are my most important inspirations, which is pure love and positive influence."

S~ “What do you hope to accomplish as an artist?”

Luke- "I will continue to create my personal works , but I want to fuse my love of helping others and art inspire and help nurture positive creative growth in the art community. I plan to eventually open a gallery/art space that facilitates a studio/gallery space for underprivileged youth, and underrepresented artists. I want to give to the community an opportunity to gain access to supplies and to gallery shows, without the worries of money, professional art training, or status. Everyone should be given the means to enjoy and prosper from self expression regardless of societal hardships."

S~ “What do you consider your greatest achievement to date?”

Luke- "Being alive today, many times I sadly took my life for granted, and had a very harsh past, but how I feel today is completely opposite, I feel life is what your will it to be and I refuse to give up with out a fight!"

S~ ”How does collaborative and live painting affect your work?”

Luke- "Live painting always distracts me, I never can really get a full piece done while in live session, but content wise it’s already set in motion before I arrive at the venue. I have not had many opportunities to do Collaborations but for personal tattoo artwork with my tattooist Jeff stone, which I think is fantastic fusion, but I really think collaborations are amazing, and I get more excited about the energy dynamic between creative minds than the actual art itself."

S~ “Do you prefer collaboration, painting for an audience over studio painting?”

Luke- "Honestly I really like painting with a group but I don’t evoke the same feeling as in my studio, my artwork is very spiritual(not religious).Creating to me in my studio puts me into a meditative like state where my most in tuned boundless creativity is produced."

S~ “Who are some of your favorite Artists to paint with?”

Luke- "Well I really enjoy working with the Art parties in Seattle, and hope to at some point work with some additional local artists that I admire."

S~ “Do you have any shows currently and/or coming up that you would like to mention?”

Luke- "I currently have work up at Artful Dodger tattoo capitol hill, and will be showing my works among other artists, and fashion art at the "oh My Posh!" Charity Fashion an Art show
Benefit for Art with Heart October 6th , 2010. And a circus themed show in Tacoma at the speakeasy co-op in early October."

S~ “Where in Seattle’s current art scene do you picture yourself?”

Luke- "Honestly I am not really sure.:) I kind of do my own thing, but love to be involved with all of the great artists in the community of seattle and Tacoma."

S~ “Where do you hope to be in 5 years?”

Luke- "Happy and still striving to be the best person that I can be."

S~ "How would you describe your work and the process you go through to create a piece of art?"

Luke- "I think of what I am thankful for in life and and honestly my own idea of what I find to be beautiful and a symbol of growth. I tap into pure spiritual creative thought, which is the most influential force behind my

works. I then like a trance kind of just start my works, I don’t think too hard about content, artistic techniques, or what art rules I should be following.

I follow my own intuition..And the art is the manifestation of that experience."
