The nerve of Paul Ryan

Rate: 11 Flag

I was having a good morning, got up at 5:30, meditated, stretched (well 60 year old stretches), painted a bit and got to work early to read a few blogs and there was this picture of Paul Ryan in a clean apron washing a clean pot! Then I read he stopped in a soup kitchen on his way to the airport, talked a volunteer into thinking it was a good idea although the kitchen was clean and none of the unfortunate "takers" were about looking all smudgy so he handed out clean aprons to his family and posed cleaning a clean pot. As the president of St. Vincent St. Paul said "He did nothing, He just came in to get his picture taken." And of course dirtied aprons to be cleaned again.

I should control myself, its ridiculous to get angry over a politician and I did smile when he obviously shaved an hour off a marathon time because in his mind he was an elite runner; posed in a work out showing legs of the true ectomorph and brags about 5% body fat because he did jog walk a marathon and thats no little thing, and he does work out; so he exaggerates, well he really exaggerates but that doeasn't make him a bad man. I but sighed when he had the audacity to lecture his own church on what real charity is and I'm sure his prayers instruct the Great CEO on the need to chastice the poor but I am not that clear on Catholic theology and the Pope is hardly poor. What do I know? I frowned that he is a genius because he has an economic plan endorsed by about as many actual economists as actual scientists denying global warming because he serves a party who finds so many facts too inconvenient to their new definition of Truth.

But to disparage the unfortunate and those who are moved by the spirit to offer them the most basic of necessities, those who Take from their time, generally their own pockets, to face the reality of poverty, misfortune, poor choices and bad luck and look into the eyes of their brothers, hear their stories, know their own small ability to do anything but give a bit of food and comfort; to look down on both the poor as subhuman and those who work for them as misguided, well intentioned fools, and then to mock their service, their efforts, their caring by pretending he has experienced any of it, that he has even given a moments true consideration of what it means because he wants to use it for part of a political strategy to allieviate some of the disquiet some voters may feel in voting for the man he (and his cameleon running mate) has always been- that has filled me with anger and disgust.

Writing this has helped. Plenty of things to get done this day and little reason to waste more time on this little, little man. My apologies for sharing but it did help.

Wow. I did not see that this morning, just started my reading, incredibly patronizing and presumptuous to say the least. So glad that it was spoken out about and the the folks at the center told the press what was actually going on so that no one was fooled. That seems to be the MO of these candidates to feign interest in people they certainly view as wanting "entitlements' such as affordable food, housing. There will always be portions of the population that will need care, right now with the working poor that segment has burgeoned. No one seems to connect the economy and jobs situation with the increased need for food stamps and a way that everyone can pay for health insurance (what they can). Are we to step over people in the street such as in third world countries? Is that what they feel is American? to help everyone in the world ( or use our taxes to blow them up) but our own citizenry when the economy is sunk and jobs are nil ? I really don't get it either Kenneth, forgive my rant also.
I saw this -- it just made me sick.
I must say I am not at all surprised by the aggressive squeeze-in of 15 minutes for a fake photo op by this guy, but I am surprised he went ahead and scrubbed clean pots instead of sensibly taking a sudden tack and just asking about the organization and the people who need it as if he actually cared.
My cynical side thought: even a smarmy politician, if they're remotely good at it, knows how to spin a situation better than this.
So bizarre, given his philosophy which frowns on charity like this. It's getting plenty of publicity, tho...hopefully more than on lib sites.
Just saw this tweet:
Paul Ryan just showed up at my house, smoothed out the duvet & said he "made the bed," claimed to alphabetize my spice rack, & did pushups.
Ken - the man is total scum who would step over a homeless vet in the street and tell him to get a job - just for the applause line.

regards.
I'd guess that he is a firm advocate of the idea that the 47% ought to get their act together and show some good ol' 'Merikan gumption and get out there and inherit a few million $$ like all good 'Merikans do.

I have cooled down and now am just disgusted. I hope the soup kitchen doesn't take any heat (initially inadvertent pun) over this. Plenty of politicians have served food for about fifteen minutes for a photograph but at least they had to come face to face with poverty and those who work the lines take home a mixture of memories to deal with- from the 47% to the "no one dies from lack of insurance" to the "takers versus makers" to this; we really will be making a statement about the soul of America come November. I think I'll look at "How the Other Half Lives" tonight just to remind myself we have come far in many ways and its just that there' s far to go.
Apparently the soul of America can be bought, sold and marketed. I found this disgusting too and Im glad you wrote about it.
i agree - paul ryan should banned from all staged photo shoots.

all politicians, in fact. no more pictures of michelle obama digging sweet potatoes in the white house garden in a $5,000 designer outfit.

no more pictures of the obama kids romping with the first dog, or trick or treating.

equal justice under the law, right?
Yes; it's sickening and emblematic of the ticket nd party.

r.
Jonathan in some ways I prefer their prior to September statements of their feelings for the less fortunate, at least they didn't indicate the majority of us cannot remember back three months or are idiots and speaking of idiots...or why bother.
He ought to live in their shoes - like Mel Brooks did in "Life Stinks"!
Well, at least his Wife's Maid will be impressed with his...Acting! R
Boy do I hear you loud and clear! I read about this and was shocked - and it takes a lot to shock me nowadays. I really enjoyed the sarcastic tone you took with it too...good for you getting it out of your system - and you did it ably. Loved "little reason to waste more time on this little, little man." Say it brother!!!
Thank you Kate and Marilyn, I'm over it now except as a "funny" story anytime politicians become a conversation.
Right! And everybody who replied here believes that President Obama would never do something for a photo op.

I have this bridge.................
catnlion,

"never do something" is a rather open ended and thus meaningless statement. President Obama has never disparaged the unfortunate among us as Paul Ryan consistently does and thus could not be in a position to compound it by pretending to help out at a soup kitchen once it was sanitized of the actual consumers and even if he did your defense of Paul is no defense at all. I have no doubt you bought that bridge from one of the Koch brothers or their ilk but I doubt very much you own a bridge.
