- I'm a 40-year-old linguist currently working as a researcher at Radboud University in Nijmegen (the Netherlands). The photo above shows me in 2005 in Oregon, during a workshop on South American historical linguistics (of course, this was not my workshop presentation...)
Besides being totally crazy about languages, I'm also interested in gender and social issues (a correct understanding of society and how it really works -- especially its interaction with the individual -- fascinates just as much as it eludes me).

Parity and equality
So, basically: are equality and parity synonymous, at least between the genders? And why?
Unlike my other posts, this one will be rather short; the main reason being that I am not really sure about my opinion on this topic.
The motivation for this question was another Broadsheet post by Kate… Read full post »
Rape, men, and society
Well, we all abhor rape. We're appalled by it. Yet it still happens. Why is it so?
A first answer -- let us call it the "culture of rape" answer -- is that, well, our society still isn't really appalled by it. There are forces (the 'patriarchy') that keep rape… Read full post »
Misogyny, misandry, misunderstanding
Nobody can deny that there are people who hate certain groups. So, there indeed is such a thing as misogyny: as a man, I have often enough heard comments and seen behaviors by men (and sometimes, paradoxically, by women) that were clearly meant to be offensive to the whole female sex.… Read full post »
Reaching the Goal
So, what is equality? And, perhaps more importantly, when do (or did?) we reach it, and how do we know that?
An important part of the problem is the fact that, even though equality can be defined in some common-sensical way that will achieve near-general consensus (e.g. 'the same treatment for… Read full post »
Whys and wherefores
Well, why not?
Gender, sex, and their interactions with other social variables, now and in the past (and in the future) -- to me, that's quite an interesting topic. Since all of us are people and have gender (social views) and sex (biological realities), then whatever is now going on about… Read full post »
