I'd rather be jumping

Max and Nano's Excellent Adventure

More than just an ordinary dog, Max is my buddy, my pooch, my every dog all in one. So when Trig said he wanted to go camping, my brain wailed "but what about my dog???" I was mortified, now what? I had no one left at home to watch him while I went traipsing about Nowhere Kansas. Ugh. My aging, over-sized, and arthritic dog would need to accompany us, me, or else. So began the mental gymnastics while I wrestled with this new problem.

Ok Ok Ok, let me think! I know! I'll get one of those thingys I can set up, you know the screened in camping shelters. Yes that could work...I don't care if my minimalist boyfriend thinks I'm nuts, its his job to love me and accept my idiosyncrasies. Of course Max could rip through the mesh and escape, or be stolen! I'd be racked with sorrow and guilt, no that won't do.

Next idea? If its not too hot, I could park the Tahoe in the shade, roll down the windows and stick a fan in the back and he could be fine.

Nothing left to do but to do it.

So I packed... Dog food, his expensive supplement and I even picked up some Rimadyl (NSAID meds) from the vet's office. Oh and a fan. The weather promised to not cooperate and I assumed I would wilt, horribly, right next to my big hairy dog.

Blue moon fever? Perhaps!

When we pulled in the place was pretty much vacant. Max stayed with me and Trig was left to set up camp on his own. I assumed I was much too encumbered to assist. meh.

But I like to take pictures.

The sunset was gorgeous over the glassy water

A really big small mouth bass, which trig threw back, declaring it too beautiful to slaughter. *weeping*

Also note the extended little finger, not easy cause this sucker was heavy!

Now after one trip out, we thought, hmmmm, wonder if we could set up the boat to accommodate my pooch. Getting him in and out of the boat was the only real difficulty. Max was quite a trooper and Nano was happy to have his over-sized friend along for the ride.

A new fish finder?

The heat was sweltering and we tried to take shelter in the tent. Didn't work but this picture is cute. You can see Nano's butt as he burrows into the blankets.

My reason for camping, my love, the old spice man...

(yes a different trip, but a sexy pose, no?)

A pooch so tired he's stuck on the console! I, as gently as possible, shifted him off and he curled up in the back.

And our maiden trip as a two barker family was all in all a success. I whined about the heat (it was but a mere high of 99 degrees), Max barked hello, good bye and see-ya-later at everyone and trig got his fishing fix and dinner for several nights.

Believe in your smellf.

those are excellent photos, ms. asia, and i like your grey-faced pooch. seems i have a thing for old dogs. :) lovely sunset and pretty moon too. laughed hard at "two barker" for sure.
Gorgeous, just gorgeous. I love the Blue Moon photo. And your Old Spice Man's not too shabby either. Maybe camping's not so bad.
Max is a handsome devil and Nano is in a class by himself. As half a fish myself, I tend to think *all* fish are too beautiful to eat. But I'll share our shameful secret--we fish like to eat fish, so we can hardly blame you 100% humans. The photos are absolutely beautiful and make me nostalgic for Kansas. Life is a funny old dog.
He is indeed a sexy old dog. Great photographs, great post.

The wonder of this relationship, you and the dog of-course, is fabulous. Praise be to Max! On the other hand, what's that yellow thing in the corner that you brought along?
Love the pics..of you all!

Thank you fem. My gray faced pooch is a one of a kind and I think the trip did him good. He's been depressed from losing my mom, my son moving out, and my trip to Michigan when I had to leave him, and had been acting oddly. Insecure I believe, but has improved these last few days.

Oh Margaret, I would not have traded my air conditioning for anyone but trigger. I could have poached an egg on my forehead it was so hot.
Sirenita, I do think fish eating fish is necessary, you can't live on seaweed salad for long before craving some protein. I'm just glad there isn't a need to eat little people and that fish, fowl, and beef exist. "Life is a funny old dog." No doubt I can learn from my old dog, like sleep more and stress less.
Scylla, I have a couple of sexy old dogs I think.

TME, I've had many a dog in life as well as plenty of other creatures, and he is about as dear to my heart as any animal has been. And I'm keeping the old spicy man too, I've become quite fond of the old dawg.
Don't Max & Nano swim? When we drove down to our "Beach House" on the bayou, my mother's dachshund would would literally jump out of the truck, run the 300 feet to the dock and then leap into the water. Missy loved swimming.
Smoooooooooth waters. Looks like a good outing despite the heat.
Tell your Old Spice man that the upper seam of his man-girdle is creasin' his yellow shirt in an odd way 10 inches below his nipples.
Hey jmac, Max has always loved the water and used to swim a bit, he also used to be all black... He does wade in to his belly and splash around. Nano doesn't seem inclined to swim and doesn't even like to get his feet wet, maybe he needs a little push.

aka, the water was superb and the heat was almost tolerable. Mornings and evenings were pleasant enough.

Joisey, that's his tool shed. Wouldn't want it to get sunburned now.
Max was awesome- even having to load his 98 lb self in the boat was worth while as he obviously found it enjoyable... just glad to be along as an observer of the (hot) beauty!
I have had to stay home for many of my husband's and kids trips camping because there are few nice parks that take dogs and I am a fanatic about not leaving him. My little Ed just got some great hiking in this weekend- though. I loved your pictures.
God, you and Trig are leading a charmed existence in Kansas. Great looking couple and great photos. Life is good. :) R.
snarkychaser - I had to leave the big guy here while I made the trip to Michigan, over 2100 miles round trip, where we buried my mom's ashes. Instead of kenneling him, I had the next door neighbor come over and take care of him. By the time I got home, Max was so depressed. The camping trip definitely had a positive affect on him and seemed to reset his brain. I should never have to leave him again.
Deborah, well I don't know about that! Have always felt blessed though and try not to take life for granted. I've had the rug yanked out from under me a few too many times. But yes, life is good, still in a state of flux, but I feel like I know where I'm headed for the first time in many years.
