Like the constant hum of vuvuzelas, which sound like bees without the fear of a sting, our weekly world and US news has become so consistent with the same flavor of strife that it's been, well - boring as all hell.
It's almost as bad as it can be and, you know what, I'm tired of hearing about it.
Ecological disaster threatening human coastal dwellers, wildlife, our food supply, and our petrol supply? It's apparently become so bad that we're moving towards the patriotic, American solution: let's just nuke it. Check.
Worldwide financial crisis? Check.
Governments of developing nations going bankrupt, yet "claiming" a turnaround? Check.
Ideological wars that cannot be won, yet continue to generate casualties on a daily basis? Also, a general talking shit about the President (generally not a positive sign)? Check.
A stock market that plummets day after day in response to high unemployment, low consumer confidence, and the Euro's value deteriorating? Check.
A healthcare system that is still punishing the needy and unfortunate despite alleged reform? Check.
A legislative system that justifies its decision or indecision by fear mongering to its constituents? Check.
A state that used to be the world's fifth largest economy becoming so freaking broke that it's governor decides that the only way to go is force 200,000 of its state employees to be paid minimum wage? Check.
Incidently, this same state (guess which one!) is considering using its license plates for advertising.
I'm fairly certain that I could keep going, but I'm getting depressed. Also, I'm starting to feel quite redundant, like a shitty broken Raffi record, y'know - like the news itself.
I feel like this is (and I feel this way frequently) the film Idiocracy. If you have seen it, you know what I'm going to say, as it's referenced in the title of this blog. If you haven't seen it, what I'm referring to is a copy of Newsweek that the hero character comes across, emblazoned with a girl with huge cans and the cover story "Shit Sucks". Yup, that's pretty much it. Shit sucks.
For over two years I found myself almost consistently inspired by something in the news that was either odd, fucked up socially, or new and intriguing. But for the past several weeks it's been painfully dull, painfully repetitive, and proof of a consistent downward spiral. It's like information stagnation.
I get excited on days that the stock market takes a huge bowel movement just because...something happened. This is sad.
To be perfectly clear, these types of signs of almost certain inflation are good for me, because it's my only chance of improving my standard of living. There's no shot in hell my employer would take a chance on giving me a raise at this time, despite the fact that many of my strategic initiatives have floated us through the recession with minimal impact.
But I digress...
Idiocracy is often thrown around on OS and other liberal blogs. However, the solution to our problem is sadly much like the one offered, from the heavens, in Idiocracy. In the film, the hero (Luke Wilson) is frozen in a cryogenic chamber and awakes 500 years in the future to find this world subsisting on horribly processed food, advertising revenues generated in any place possible, and in an ever deepening recession, with a government to retarded to do anything about it.
The only difference between that fictional futureland and present day is that we don't have a retarded government, but a paralyzed one. Our government appears to be paralyzed by the senate and the congress. By partisanship, for lack of a better generalization.
When I was a little kid and I had a disgareement with a friend that put us a playtime stalemate, I yelled "MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAM" and looked to her to fix our problem, by simply making a decision.
We're so fucking childish and our system so broken, that maybe we need mom to make a decision that will allow for subsequent forward movement. Mom was the leader...she was the queen of our household.
Wait! Queen?
Huzzah! I've got it.
Mayhaps, we need a monarchy. I believe the Queen might be up for some consulting work. I hear they're a bit strapped as well.

Given that the Queen depends on taxpayers, and the taxpayers don't have any money despite the fact that the government is trying to siphon more out of them, it's a bad sign.
To be perfectly fair, the Queen hasn't opted to attempt to give herself a raise for twenty years. I appreciate the realistic austerity in that.
Thank you for your comment!
Yes...I had to stop watching the news. For years and years I was a totally rabid junkie for 24 hour news channels - I liked to compare and contrast them until I realized that my experiment would ultimately have the same result. Fox was conservative, MSNBC liberal, and CNN had zero opinion and got taken over by the Twitter experience.
To your point, pundits are just as bad as politicians, except that they only have to answer to producers, not constituents.
I feel the same: shit-storm days that in which we live.
I agree that Washington is stagnant because of partisan clashes (and vain obstructionism) but part of all this, I believe, goes back to the decision made by Barack Obama to run a centrist administration rather than leading strong to the 'left' instead of the middle. To be more specific I mean Obama should have embodied more a Krugman / FDR kind of model.
The congress are by their nature followers. They would follow a different note if it was different from the beginning.
Clinton did the same shit the first years he was in office: wasting time trying to court centrists and bipartisans.
Complaining and hoping to come to a solution in a stream of consciousness on my own is my schtick.
But anyway. I had never heard of Initiative for Democracy. I checked out what I think is their site. Very interesting.
Thank you for your comment and also, thank you for making me a favorite!
Yes, I have been reading Krugman's op-ed column as of late and quite enjoy his thoughts. For the most part, as well, I agree with them. FDR totally had it nailed though. Too bad he wasn't able to institute for the US what he instituted for Germany, England, and Japan.
I wish I could have a more positive response to that, but my overwhelming cynicism causes me to pause, then go "phfffffffffff yeah right."
Reality never sells.
Is Queen Latifa in financial trouble? How come I never know these things? Who is Megan Fox? Is there a way you can post that other picture again? I feel crazier and less alone, thank you I think.
