The Week We Feared Lesbians

Rate: 7 Flag

Shiloh is freaking adorable.The gay man has been unfortunately been assigned a poster child. The man in flourescent pink short shorts walking down Santa Monica Boulevard, swinging his hips like he's samba-ing by his lonesome? Yeah, that's him. And the movie Bruno was one big joke about how he doesn't really exist, but he's what all homophobes wanting to hate gays believe they are. So maybe we're slowly sauntering away from that idea...I fucking hope so anyway.

But lesbians...

 Lesbians are a curious creature. We really aren't sure about them yet. We haven't completely agreed on the "bull dyke" visual portrayal yet, but we may as well. Do they go to the bathroom like we heteros do? Do they eat bean and cheese burritos when they're really hung over like we heteros do? Odd...but gosh golly gee darn...I'm just not sure.

 Are lesbians the next secret intruders into heterosexual sanctity and dungeons of ignorance?

 WHAT IF MY DAUGHTER'S* TEACHER IS A LESBIAN AND SHE TRIES TO TEACH MY DAUGHTER TO BE A LESBIAN, TOO???

(At this point, feel free to replace "LESBIAN" with any other group that bigots like to pick on. We will call this "the social minority variable").

I have a newsflash for you: your kid is going to be what your kid is going to be. Relax and have fun with him/her.

This week (and some weeks in the recent past) truly showed how the royal "we" have moved on from freaking the fuck out about gay men and starting shitting our pants over the idea that some women like other women's woman parts.

So much so in fact that Fox News purported that gangs of lesbians in the LA prison system were waiting to gang rape Lindsay Lohan when her whiskey tanned little ass arrives. Yes, I'm sure the gangs of lesbians can't wait to "rape" her with um...I don't even know. This doesn't sound like something that equates to the female gender.

 Then Angelina Jolie's daughter Shiloh was lambasted for dressing like a boy. Angelina acknowledged that Shiloh likes dressing like a boy and wants to be a boy. By the way, Shiloh is so god damned cute that my brain starts pumping oxytocin like the Hoover Dam when I see a photo of her.

But I digress.

Big fucking deal. Oh wait, the underlying message here is that Angelina's going to turn her daughter into a lesbian by way of allowing her to dress in stereoyptically male clothing. One of the world's most beautiful feminine creatures doesn't care that her daughter doesn't want to be just like her? HOLD THE FUCKING PHONE. There's a good mother on the other end named Angelina Jolie and she's so good that she isn't even going to take your bait and tell you to fuck off. She's just going to continue on, doing what she does. Which is make poor film choices but be a wonderful mother. So that's cool.

 Several weeks ago, a study came out stating that lesbians were by far the most fit demographic of parents.  This study, that was 17 years in the making, found that lesbian parents raised extremely well psychologically adjusted children. Wait, you mean to tell me that people who had been given the most shit in their lives, yet still managed to get through it and be great people, have careers, and long lasting relationships...are amazing parents? Get right the fuck out. And get off my lawn while you're at it.

And finally, let's not forget that Hillary Clinton is incessantly (and silently) accused of being a lesbian. An unfortunate and misogynistic price to pay for being rad.

Lesbians, just like all of rich, white America's most feared demographics ( African Americans, gay men, Latinos, Muslims, and the list can go on), are the next on the chopping block to be judged and then silently and reluctantly accepted by rich white heterosexual people.

I suppose this is a horrible right of passage. A disgusting step into a media petri dish that ultimately will result in winning rich white heteros' approval.

But I have to wonder (think of this like a prelude to a sequel): who really wants their approval? They pretty much suck.

*I don't have a daughter. That's my fictional daughter that I would hope would adore her teacher and never give a shit about her race, creed, sexuality or for that matter, what kind of coffee cup she drinks out of.

I'm always so behind the times, I didn't realize we're afraid of lesbians this month. I dressed my girls in jeans and flannel or t-shirts. How can you have fun in all the itchy ruffly stuff and your skirt flying up in your face. Besides all that stuff is hard to get clean, she not bitching up her kid she's giving her room to play. People with "help" don't understand, it's a practical matter. Oh, and my mother has similar sweaters and blouses.

Heading for bed in men's knit boxers, the last boyfriend left them behind. Maybe tomorrow I'll wake up male, then I can stand up to pee in the woods.
l'Heure Bleue:
I think we're afraid of lesbians right now, but I didn't check with the bigotry council.

I wanna pee in the woods, too! At least without getting pee all over my feet. That would be awesome.

High five to you on dressing your girls practically. I was a filthy kid. My mom never attempted to buy me anything nice.
You tell em Asta! Great post. Rated
I had to laugh about some of your lines...Thanks!
Sometimes, I am very attracted to lesbians...
I really thought people knew that many lesbians don't tress in stereotypically male garb. Lesbian does not equal boy. A lesbian is a WOMAN who is attracted/loves another woman. A lesbian isn't defined by her dress.

On the other hand, I think people might wonder if Shiloh is trans if she is stating she wants to be a boy.
@Brie:
Thank you! I like to tell people things.
@Patrick Frank:
I used to wish I was a lesbian. Alas, you can't fight biology.
Thank you for making me a favorite, and thank you for reading!
@HowSoonIsNow:
Stereotypes are the strongest when representing "misunderstood" groups, or groups that have not yet been examined in great depth by media. Sadly...because of this...lesbians are to endure the wrath of judgement by media until media realizes that they're boring just like everybody else.
This is just so damn good._r
Thank you so much, Joan!
I heard the choir singing on this one earlier, and I like Angelina Jolie, but I don't think anyone has a clue as to her child's temperament or behavior as modeled by her Mom. Ask again in 15 or 20 years, but you drew me into reading the whole thing and I think I'm a lesbian trapped in a man's body anyway, so...(R)ated!
@Fred Hallman:

I hope that some day your inner lesbian can come out to play.
Thank you for reading and rating. :)
Great post! This week I caught William Wyler's "The Children's Hour" on cable (AMC maybe), which I highly recomment. Made in 1961, it stars a very young Shirley MacLaine, Audrey Hepburn, and James Garner, all of whom do impressive work. MacLaine is the closet lesbian in love with her teaching colleague Hepburn, who is about to marry Garner.

When a vicious little girl spreads a lie that she oversaw her teachers doing "unnatural" things, the women lose all their students, not to mention their standing in the community. Even Garner, initially supportive, begins to have doubts about his fiance's commitment.

The movie is very well done, especially the second half where we see the women struggle somewhat hopelessly to come to terms with their downfall, while virtually imprisoned in their homes. Little needs to be said, yet the message is clear: If even false rumors of lesbianism can ruin people's lives, imagine what it must be like for those who actually do want to act on their desires?

You'd think that, 50 years later, society would have moved past such silliness. There have been some strides, but not nearly enough.
