Bio
"Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita," I find myself still asking some of the same questions I did when I was just a punk kid. The Big Things confuse me. Fortunately, though, many little things delight and amuse me, and some Big Things--my wife, our kids, our bird and bunny visitors, food, baseball--make me very, very happy. In my pilgrimage, I try to be guided by the wisdom of dear old Auntie Mame: "Life is a banquet!"

Remembering Mami

Rate: 14 Flag

Mami—Mrs. P’s mother—would have been ninety-five today. Of course, her birthday was less important to her than that other event that comes around this time of year, Mother’s Day. That was the day that mattered to her, the day she cherished.

Mami

Mami in 2003, three years before she died

She was a most wonderful lady, more Mima than suegra (mother-in-law) to me, suffering my malaprop-laden, halting Spanish, willing to put up with my gringo ways, always treating me as her hijo, ready to laugh or tell a story, ready to correct the younger generation’s errant ways when necessary.

She was the quintessential Abuela, always making platters of bistec empanizado, always with a stock of Klondike bars for a grandson and a thoughtful ear for a granddaughter, always slipping us a twenty for gas on the ride home, always ready to cuddle the newest baby.

She drove me nuts with her damn tissues and the rubberbands on books (don’t know why, that just got me) and that cloying fruit cocktail. She made me laugh with her potato salad on pizza and her over-the-glasses arched eyebrow of disapproval. She made me love her. In spite of the tripe. Maybe even because of it.

Here’s un regalito, Mami. Cuidate. Descansa. ¡Feliz cumpleaños y feliz día de las madres!

I remember I Remember Mami fondly. It was the first serial I subscribed to when I started OS. I even learned a few new Spanish words. Requiescant in pace Mami.
Pilgrim your series on your mother-in-law was largely responsible for me hanging around this place. I was amazed at the beauty of the story and the talent of the writer and I knew that I wanted to be a part of any place that produced writers and pieces like that.
me too.

I'm missing my women today, too. and that's as it should be.

lovely piece pilgrim. thank you.
You series on Mami was some of the finest writing I've seen on OS in my time here. I always looked forward to it, and hated it had to end.
This is a wonderful time to to put these in one place, I agree. Having you as a son-in-law must have been a big source of pride and joy for her. Lucky both of you.
I will have to catch up!!! Great tribute!

I am so happy to see a picture of Mami. You may have put one up before, but I missed it. You gave her to us so beautifully in "I Remember Mami" that I feel that I also knew her; I will add her to the list of beloved mothers honored on Sunday.
Matt, Torman, scanner, Buffy, Ann: Thank you for remember her, too.

Monkey: I saw, and your regret was beautiful.

Susie: If you're really going to do that, you should have a box of tissues handy. (And your head examined . . . .)
Sounds so sweet. I miss my mom. R
What everyone else says only triple!!!!!!
You were finishing this series when I was just starting at OS. I remember thinking, wow, this guy is read by everyone! I don't remember if I began reading the series or just started on other posts. The good thing is ha! summer is beginning soon and I'll have time to read at leisure. It's on my bookmarks bar now.
Sheba: You just have to aim a little better . . .

LL: Smiling.

vanessa: Ha! Well, sumer is icumen in, You'd have to be cuckoo! If you do (and I'd be honored), make sure you have a mess of tissues handy.
I stayed away from the Mother's Day posts because they make me feel all orphan-y and self-pitying. I make an exception for Mami. Such a wonderful photo. I loved "I Remember Mami" - so much I didn't let myself read to the end. I'm so glad you gathered the Mami posts together here - it's time to make another exception.
candv: Mami and I are honored.
