Repost Saturday - All Aboaaaard!

Rate: 24 Flag

It's about this idea I pilfered, and it's not the first time either ...

says Cranky Cuss:

"Another repost: the very first thing I ever posted here that I thought had some creative merit.  I hope to start posting some new stuff starting on Saturday..."

----------------------------------

He says he will start posting new stuff on SATURDAY, which we know is a shameful waste because the front page is stuck in a time warp from Friday until at least mid day Monday, and after 3 pm Friday you've missed the boat to post anything you'd like to see garner attention via the Front Page.

Now not all of us are here for that reason mind you,  ::caughghcoughahhck:: but if you've been here longer than a mosquito's lifespan, you've notice the front page stays frozen in ambergris on Saturday and Sunday, and publishing on the weekend will never get anyone that coveted EP - you know you want it.

There's also the Moldy Oldy 3 Day 'Most Read' feed, which certainly doesn't update from Friday to Monday, (or any other day but I digress), rendering the exalted Front Page as limp as a .... a wet noodle, yeah - a wet noodle - for an entire 48+ hour period.  For many of us, it's this selfsame 48 hours that we use to catch up on our reading around here.

I'd like to suggest a proclamation.  We need something 'new' to read on the weekends, and we all have older posts we loved and felt had a wider audience appeal, but didn't get much readership (for whatever reason, who cares?) when they were initially published.

Maybe we were noobs and didn't get OS 'timing' back then, which is a fairly well studied, but not broadly discussed subject around here.

I mean why alert everyone to something we think only we have discovered, eh?  (Try not to even look in the direction of that golden Easter Egg over there, somebody might snatch it up before you can get to it!)

So all those in favor of Repost Saturday, just do it! Talk it up by including "Repost Saturday" in the title and the tags of your re-published work.  We'll all get to bring our 'old' stuff to the swap meet and have something new to enjoy over the weekend.

I'm publishing this on Friday morning! Reposters, Unite!

(I need something to read this weekend)

Well, I'M here anyway ... how about you?
I've already got one picked out. :)
Absolutely LC, and I LOVE creme brulee, even when served with coffee for breakfast the next day.
I'm posting stuff from 2008 - does that count?
I just wanted to compliment you on using the word "ambergris." The fancy prep school's surprise at my correct definition of it during my entrance interview at age 13 has been a family joke for years.
ha! Sally, did I spell it right? Hope you'll join us because I know for sure you have some very nice things in your closet just waiting to be brought out for us to admire. The older the better, like a fine wine.
Geraint, 2008 was a very good year, so keep it coming over the fence buddy.
Not a bad idea! Especially since I'm at a total loss for what to write next.
Sounds like a great idea....I look forward to finding some of the things I wasn't around to see the first time!

Thanks for this idea!
Love the idea.
Rated with hugs and a repost
That's a novel idea, Gabby, count me in. Is this an Open Call or something? Rated for the novelty. :o)
I'm getting lots of comments via PM too, but would like to respond here and say I'd really like to see a designated 'day' like we have for other things, so folks feel they can get some play on some prior good stuff, without having to apologize for it.

Saturday is a 'slow' news day around here, and it's not prime time for posting if you're after front page exposure, so save the great new stuff for weekday publishing.

Let's admit it - when will we ever see a re-post on the FP, much less get an EP? So serve 'em up folks! I know you've got 'em and I want to read 'em. Viva la Repost Saturday!
I usually cause enough pain on the first time around, but let me think on this
This is a goooood idea, unless someone starts some fun. We used to have crazy fun here. I have some moldy oldies that can molt at the top of my pile for a couple of days.
fun? I like fun. The difference between 'used to' and now is due (in part) to the exodus of a number of the people who had gotten to know one another during the first year of OS and had become 'friends' when the membership was much smaller. They'd start a live blogging comment thread, where there were a # of people on at once - maybe arranged by phone calls, PMs to email, etc., and before you knew it a pile on would happen and it would have nothing to do with the post at all - it was just a bunch of people having fun flinging shit back and forth over the fence. Wanna start some fun?
Sounds like a plan
Ok, good idea. There is so much from so many I would love to read. Yes, I like the idea!_r
Recipe for fun- I think we have to all be on at the same time and start being witty. A little good old fashioned ribbing and teasing is involved, and we'd have to get to know each other a little before making remarks that only friends could appreciate. I'll take phone#s anytime and call you when I'm feeling frisky. So far, I'll be putting Trig, Bobbot, Amanda G, Joan H, Xenon (zuma) and Renatta in my speed dial - so cough up those numbers and let's get our fun on. ha!
Everybody, I think we're in luck because Trig's about to start some fun over at his place at 6pm EST. Let's meet there in a few cuz I promised to bring popcorn and an air horn to the party!
Just yesterday I was looking back at some of my earliest posts and thought about a repost now and then. Good idea, especially on a holiday weekend.
Great idea, Gabby, I agree. R
I post when I must. Which is rarely the right time for the Editor's perusal. I kick myself often. Like this afternoon. I posted one of my all time best posts (::caughghcoughahhck:: *), "no, you hang up" and I KNEW it would have a shot at EP if I had waited til Monday but there's a part of me that doesn't want an EP if it doesn't come "naturally.
I am so full of shit I always want an EP and I have no clear idea what "natural" means in this context. I am perverse about my work.

OS 'timing'? um, what's 'that'? (whistles, scuffs shoes)

I like Repost Saturday. A lot. But I just promised about 80 OSrs i would not post again until I commented on all 80 of them at least once . I have a list. Gabby, you are #6, so far.

This is actually fun! Who knew there were OTHER good writers?

* I stole this. Just now.
I think this idea has a lot of merit. There is a huge amount of great material that lies buried... a regular "Repost Saturday" would resurrect some good stuff and allow people to save new material for the weekdays. R.
You don't seem gabby to me. Who stuck you with that monicker?
This is a great idea and I agree with the reasoning. I'm headed over now to dust off some of my more moldy entries.
I'm of two minds. (Christ, who'm I kidding - I only have half of one of those.) On the one hand (I do have two of those) I think "Yay! Someone wants my orphans." On the other hand I think "But what if they jet them back with a note pinned to their jackets?" I also think "timing?"
If someone would like to share the concept of 'OS Timing' with me, that would be interesting. It has eluded me thus far. lol The one and only EP/Cover I had was a total shock to me. There was no timing involved at all.
Gabby, I like the Repost Saturday idea.
Lezlie
I'm going right now to check my stuff. I KNOW I have a bunch of stuff that could use a repost or a relook or even just a second chance. GREAT IDEA.

thanks and have a splendorous weekend!
Great idea! I wrote something once. Maybe I'll try to find it.
Hi all - on the timing thing - see Greg Correll's comment above, he pretty much sums it up.

In a nutshell - Front page stuff is generally updated daily on weekdays. OS front page is deader than an unplugged TV on weekends, so it's suggested you save the 'good stuff' for a weekday - when you might have a chance for front page exposure or, god bless you, an EP! That stuff doesn't happen on weekends.

Re-treads on Saturday spices up the joint a little, and there's nothing to lose - these pieces won't be picked for the front page precisely because they've already been published. On the other hand, they keep local traffic moving over the weekend and give everyone something to read on Writers Day Off.

Capice? Congrats to everyone, it's looking good out there today.
I thought someone who using my name in vain!

I've been posting music things many Saturdays because I don't care if they're considered for the front page. But I can switch to another day. Saturdays seem like a good day for reposts.
Crank! it's a good time for music too. This isn't about everyone reposting every weekend, but when the feeling comes on ya, there's a guilt free day to do it and it won't cost a dime, or an EP.
I've been looking for an excuse to re-post, ;-) - thanks!
Ruff - based on this weekend turnout, it looks like everybody's been looking for a window for a repost - the things I've read today are phenomenal and representative of the best we have on OS. It's a cryin shame to let such good work go unread, and we all have good work that didn't get play the first time around. Now we have a day to showcase those things. Hope you'll send up something sometime soon.
