Norwegian Uncle Gets a Remodel for his Birthday.
Your Norwegian Uncle turns 37 in a few days. As his gift this year, I decided that I would give his bathroom a makeover. It's a very small space, and it has to double as the guest bathroom and the laundry room (our house is a tiny 1240 square feet). That means the room needed a lot more storage. There was a set of wood shutters over the window inside the shower that was molded beyond repair. This past weekend, my mother came down to the big city to help me paint the bathroom and put up shelving.
Since it's Norwegian Uncle's bathroom, I decided that I would go with a color I knew he'd love -- Razorback Red. Uncle is from North Dakota originally, but after he moved to Arkansas he fell in love with the piggies. He goes to football games three hours early so he can watch everyone fill up the stadium. He followed Darren McFadden's draft closer than he followed the Presidential election. He is a true fan.
Thankfully, there's more than one line of paints that come in official University of Arkansas colors. That started a whole series of design choices that resulted in the world's most obviously fandom inspired bathroom:

The red is actually nice against the white tile, I think. I also really love the storage solution I found. The Container Store has a series of cubes made from galvanized steel -- in white coated and plain. I bought two metal cubes and bolted them to opposite walls. I put a door on one cube and a shelf inside the other, with no door. This lets Norwegian Uncle get his toiletries off the counter top. It also gives us a place to store towels, toilet paper, and laundry supplies. The cubes are really the perfect size for what we needed. There's also room to stack cubes above each of these if we decide we need even more storage space.

I painted the mirror black because it's the main accent color in the room. It's also an official Razorback color. My Mom found the Razorback accessories, including the hog towel holder there on the wall, and the Hogs outlet cover someplace online. She also go him a big black rug for the floor.
We only had one major disaster -- one of the shelves we put up over the door came crashing down the day after we finished the room. It broke Norwegian Uncle's Hog snowglobe. It's a shelf identical to this:

I bought these shelf holders at the Container Store as well. They claim to hold up to 80 lbs without screw anchors. That was obviously a high estimate. I think the problem is completely fixable with some anchors and maybe a little Gorilla glue, I just haven't gotten around to fixing it yet.
My next project is going to be the hallway. Now that I've got a new job, I may be able to actually paint all the things I have left to do in this house before I'm truly happy. A lot of that involves painting all the dull, tidy white walls some shocking color.
