Pat Robertson, You Are A Horrible Human Being

Rate: 3 Flag

A common complaint when a religious fundamentalist--of any faith--opens their gob and says something stupid is: "Where are the moderate voices?"

Well, this lefty Texas Episcopalian can't keep his mouth shut about what might be the most horrible, insensitive, over-the-top moronic thing Pat Robertson has ever said. And let's face it--that's one hell of a bar to top.

In case you missed it, "Reverend" Pat Robertson said that Haiti got what it deserved because they made a deal with the devil. Well, no, you pseudo-religious sack of...(I can't actually think of an appropriate adjective to express my true feelings). The slave population of Haiti rebelled because of rampant colonial abuses; they were successful because France was in the throes of revolution and because they were pre-occupied with fighting the European powers bent on snuffing out said revolution. The devil had nothing to do with it, unless you want to call Maximilien Robespierre the devil.

Worse than that, Robertson has abjectly failed in what is, arguably, the most important duty for any Christian anywhere, namely care and support for the poor among us. If you use a biblical search engine and type in the word "poor," Pat, you get a lot of hits. I got 172 verses throughout the New International Version using Studylight, for instance. How can you, Pat Robertson, get down on your knees and pray to God in good conscience when your first reaction at the devastation of one of the planet's most impoverished nations is not appealing to your millions of followers to send help, but instead blame these people--who have lost what little they had if they even survived--for the natural disaster which befell them.

That is not what Jesus says. That is not what the Bible says. It is, in fact, the opposite of those things have said. You could have been an example of spiritual leadership; instead you chose to be an example of mean-spirited ignorance. Maybe you think that Haiti is mostly Catholic (and they aren't really Christian therefore) and so there aren't enough "real" Christians there to worry about. Well, the first email I got directing me to relief resources came from a rabbi. However few Evangelicals there are in Haiti, Mr. Robertson, I will guarantee that there are even fewer Jews. But that doesn't matter, nor should it, to the millions of people contributing time, money, materials and skills to all the organizations--religious and secular--doing whatever they can to ease the suffering of the Haitian people.

And so, Pat Robertson, for whatever it may be worth I'm calling you out. I'm calling you out as a false prophet. And with that, I'll leave you with the following. First, from 2 Peter 2:1:

"But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be falseteachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them - bringing swift destruction on themselves."

Even more to the point, from Jude 1:4:

For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.

I don't like making judgments about people but Pat Robertson, you have given ample proof that you are a miserable, horrible, hypocritical human being. If you do make it into heaven, I hope you are behind a long, long line of these so-called "devil worshippers." In the meantime do us all a favor and shut your worthless mouth.

Kudos! I have written something similar about fat fu#@ limbaugh's recent tirade. Thanks for posting!
The only God Robertson prays to is the one on the hundred dollar bill. Pretty much the entire New Testament is about how people shold do the exact opposite of the "evangelical" movement.
He's a fool. What a national embarrassment.

Thanks for the post. You did the work for many of us.
Excellent observations Jay, I made the same about Rev. Robertson from the pulpit 15 years ago when he claimed that his followers prayers diverted a hurricane from the shores of Virginia.
And it's only gotten worse since then, Jon. Since then he's blamed gays for 9/11 but showed no embarassment at being in bed with the late and unlamented regime of Charles Taylor in Liberia with his investments in gold mining there.

As I said, most of the time I try to ignore what people like Robertson or Limbaugh or Beck say because responding with outrage to their all too predictable statements is like trying to lower sea levels with a teaspoon. But sometimes silence can equal complicity; I think this is one of those times.
