Indigo Blue

August 02
Early Childhood: Green meadows and blue sky... clouds are passing by. It is summer, beautiful, hot summer. We children lie in the grass looking into the endless sky, wondering about the clouds... whether they are moving... or we children...watching them. It is summer. Quiet solitude... before the storm breakes loose changing everything that had been giving meaning so far...

The First Day Of The New Year

Rate: 4 Flag

As every blossom fades and all youth sinks into old age,

so every life’s design, each flower of wisdom, attains its prime

 and cannot last forever.

The heart must submit itself courageously

to life’s call without a hint of grief,

A magic dwells in each beginning,

protecting us, telling us how to live.

High purposed we shall traverse realm on realm,

cleaving to none as to a home,

the world of spirit wishes not to fetter us

but raise us higher, step by step.

Scarce in some safe accustomed sphere of life

 have we establish a house, then we grow lax;

only he who is ready to journey forth

can throw old habits off.

Maybe death’s hour too will send us out

 new-born towards undreamed-lands,

maybe life’s call to us will never find an end

Courage my heart, take leave and fare thee well.

That is what I am practicing now, and you say it so well. Best wishes for the New Year!

I accidently posted the poem twice. When I noticed it,you had already written your comment, and I then had to transfer it to the actual post. The poem was written by Hermann Hesse.
I wish you a happy new year too.Sorry about the confusion.
I wondered what had happened to my rating! Hope you're enjoying your day.
Thank you,Phyllis, have a great day too.

Toritto, thank you,and as you might guess,I wish you all the best for the coming year.I don't have the words to express my gratitude towards your loving Italian soul. You might have lived in the US all your life, but you are Italian by heart.I love you for it.
You are some poet, Heidi!
This is moving.
Thank you,Jonathan, but this is a poem by Hermann Hesse. You make a point, though:I love poetry, and I have written poems, too. One of them was bylingual.
Heidi consider publishing it here!
thank you for your encouragement.
The bilingual one was written on the occasion of birth.
Your poem sings with love for life and hope for the future! Wonderful. Rated.
Thank you,Erika,
if you know German as your name implies ,I suggest reading it in the Original. The translation is good, but in the Original you find the full beauty.(reminder:H.Hesse"Stufen";4.05.1941)
Heidi, thank you. I am American, but I studied German in college and taught English there for a year.

This passage truly grabbed me.
Here is an alternate translation I found:
“The cosmic spirit will not bind nor bore us;
it lifts and widens us in ev'ry session:
for hardly set in one of life's expanses
we make it home, and apathy commences.
But only he, who travels and takes chances,
can break the habits' paralyzing stances.”
Indeed: “ A magic dwells in each beginning,
protecting us, telling us how to live.”
Faith is: jumping headfirst, feet-following onto Ground (Grund)
Made solid by the very act of Jumping w/o hesitation.
It’s that hesitation that shows we are heathen.
'nein!' to 'Erschlaffen'!
lax, weary, apathy, limpness.
"The world of spirit higher..."
Many times I get so impatient and disgusted with myself, making the same mistakes again and again. This reminds me to be patient and realize this life is just a nanosecond in eternity.
Thanks for posting this poem!
James, sorry,I did not expect any comments after the blog had didappeared.
You are so sweet commenting it in German even.
I could have real good dialogues with you about poetry, don't you think?
Sorry for responding so late.
CCdarling:I am so sorry I missed your comment.I guess I was too upset about the insult I had to digest.
Yes I agree with you.We would like to have more control over our actions and what happens to us,too.
Like you said,it helps a great deal to realize that we are part of eternity.Once this settles into my mind, peace is the reward.
We have to keep trying, though, each time when weaknes has a grip on us.
Thank you for your comment.
