During Andrew's first day at preschool, he figured out how to unlock a door and went outside with the rest of his classmates to play. His preschool teacher was shocked and angry at Andrew. I did not know until Andrew in high school that he had been roughly shaken. His teacher appeared to be such a nice person, warm and friendly towards Andrew. I asked him "why" he never told me and he simply stated he did not want to get her into trouble.
This particular preschool allowed parents to show up at anytime to check up on their child. There were occasions when I showed up unannounced and actually believed the preschool was professionally managed.
I remember picking up Andrew and Lisa in the afternoons. Andrew would always be with another child playing in the sand and smile when he saw me. He would get up and run towards the entrance in the building to get his things, while Lisa would pout about having to leave. I would have to wait for her, but never for Andrew.
Andrew was the "perfect" child. He was friendly, followed directions, respected authority and never asked for anything unless he really wanted it. The only item he ever asked for as a preschooler was a jean jacket.
Many times the director at the preschool told me how smart Andrew was. He could solve puzzles and knew all of the songs for an upcoming Christmas program. When I attended the program, he was the only child that stood and sang all of the songs while the rest of the group gave up. I was really impressed with Andrew.
