When Andrew entered kindergarten, he was labeled as being developmentally-delayed and received services for speech. After repeating kindergarten, he did make some improvements in his speech, such as staying on topic for a short time. I truly believed Andrew would changed and become the bright-eyed toddler I had remembered. I must have seen the world through rose-colored glasses, because the change I expected was not forthcoming.
Andrew began first grade and did not improve in his ability to pick up his feet. He was not able to jump or hop. He would walk sliding his feet on the floor while carrying his left arm. I was totally oblivious to Andrew having serious problems, but I did take him to see a highly-recommended pediatrician. He had Andrew jump, hop and respond to several questions. His diagnosis was the same as what the school had determined, Andrew was developmentally-delayed and would eventually catch-up.
