Wasn’t it about a year ago that everyone – democrats included (democrats especially!) – we’re high fiving and dancing a jig over the point blank head shot that took down Osama Bin Laden, as he cowered behind wife number 4?
If you don’t remember, I just reminded you. And it’s sure to come up again during the campaign.
I’m all in favor of killing terrorists and mass murderers with a headshot, in fact. It’s more cost-effective than invading 2 countries, tens of thousands of civilian casualties, and enduring successions of ethnic warlords seeking to be kings at our expense and support.
Does this make me some sort of anti-muslim racist? I hope not. (In my defense, let me note that I’ve never torched a Koran, bible, torah, or even the bagavad gita, even though I’m devoutly secular).
I raise the question only because – morning after morning – BBC america on Comcast channel 112 shows the suffering of the Syrian people, who are seeing their cities be reduced to rubble, and their children blown to smithereens by Assad’s artillery fire. “Why doesn’t the west do something?” plead the civilians, who are interviewed by erudite BBC news readers.
Oooh . . Oooh . . I know. Call on me !!!
We’re willing to spend 10 years tracking down Osama Bin Laden – and umpteen billions of dollars – because he killed Americans.
When Assad shells apartment buildings and medical clinics, or his troops abduct and torture to death those they suspect of being insufficient obsequious to the regime, we in “the west” are clearly not so concerned. Clearly. Especially in an election year, when “core supporters” of the current administration are already conflicted about who to blame for the ongoing economic malaise and failure to achieve final victory in Afghanistan.
So . .. I apologize to the Syrian people on behalf of America. (Perhaps Ricky Gervais can do the honors on behalf of Britain?). We’re apparently not coming to your rescue. No racism intended, although I realize it kind of looks that way. President Obama apologized because some enlisted guy in Afghanistan burned a Koran, but no need to wait around for any expression of regret as Syrian civilians are massacred. We do have our priorities.
Personally, I believe muslim lives are just as valuable as Christians and Jews and Apostates who were incinerated in the World Trade Center on 9/11 . . .
But our president disagrees at this particular moment. If Assad is still blowing your kids to smithereens on inauguration day 2013, we might be able to do something. Check back then, okay?
