NFL Interview Question: Is your mom a prostitute?

Rate: 1 Flag

How would you feel if someone asked you that question, for real, not joking around?  How would you feel if that person asking you that question was the GM of the Miami Dolphins and possibly your future boss.  Miami Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland asked prospective draft pick Dez Bryant if his mom was a whore.  You know, just common interview questions:  Tell me your strengths and weaknesses? Can you work weekends?  Is your mom a whore?  This little NFL vignette is worth discussing as it is a perfect example of how race relations work in the NFL.  I ask you does this sound like a question a rich, professional business man would ask a prospective employee, or does this sound like a plantation owner baiting a slave?  Jeff Ireland has apologized... I'm sure due to his underlings reminding him that baiting his slaves in public is frowned upon.  What is perhaps more disturbing is that although many people chastized him, there were a few people who backed him up and said it was a legitimate question (see second link).

I am befuddled and disgusted, what kind of man would ask that question to another man?  How utterly disrespectful and degrading.  Men don't treat other men like that (or at least they shouldn't).  Maybe Jeff Ireland sees prospective black players from troubled backgrounds  as subhuman, because I cannot for the life of me imagine how a human would ask such a humiliating question face to face with another human.  Ugh.  I hate the NFL.

Can you imagine the uproar if Jeff Ireland asked Colt McCoy or Sam Bradord that same question?  He would have to step down from GM due to the outcry.  But he asks a poor black player, and its not even a news story.  Ugh.

Well, when the question before it was "What does your father do?" and Dez Bryant's eloquent answer was "My dad is a pimp." I'd probably follow up with the same question. Dez Bryant is not a victim here, he answered the question like a "thug" and got the appropriate response. You're an adult now Dez, act like one.
thats all fine and well except Dez Bryant never said that.
