NAVIGATING THE CHAOS GRACEFULLY – A review of Kingsley Dennis’ new book (just published by Inner Traditions), New Consciousness for a New World: How to Thrive in Transitional Times and Participate in the Coming Spiritual Renaissance

By Barbara Smith Stoff

While writing of how whole systems undergo change and evolution, and with an eloquent foreword by Ervin Laszlo who is often considered the “father” of systems science and change, Dr. Dennis writes comprehensively of what he terms the ‘spiral of cultural history’ with an extensive overview of the nature of evolutionary cycles, paradigm shifts, planetary transformation, quantum physics, quantum biology and the interconnectivity of all life—all of which he does from the informed stance of the sociologist. As well, he is author of numerous writings on complexity theory, technologies, new media communications and consciousness.

As I read, and reread, this densely packed book, with its close inspection of the oldest, deepest (and most currently prevalent) historically observable cycles in what we might call the universe—the thought that these are CYCLES is comforting!

He now addresses the urgent need to focus upon the evolution of consciousness and specifically upon our need as individuals to focus our moment to moment choices upon evolving our consciousness in a benevolent way.

For me the all important fulcrum point of the book revolves around his own long time thoughts about humankind, and especially individual persons, being transducers and grounders of energy vibrations into the planet and into the universe. It seems to me that his entire book itself does just this very thing. I include here a particularly salient excerpt:

Human beings can act as transmitters (like energy batteries), directing incoming energy across, into and through Earth, in a sense grounding the energies. Like a ground wire in electrical plugs, humans are able to ground energy that radiates from nonterrestrial sources into our earthly, planetary bodies. We serve as mobile transducers while the more static energy nodes are the ancient sacred sites, stone circles, and megalith sites that can be found dotted all over our planet. Life, including human life, is a membrane layer of transmuting energy. The power of human thought and intention can play a great part in the process of energy transference....Our world, then, as material and physical as it is, is nevertheless malleable. It can be affected by the strength of one's own presence, intentions, and thought. The possibility for humankind to realize latent inner capacities and faculties relies heavily upon making a connection to a higher form of energy. So much depends upon us making contact with those great forces that lie as close, or as far away, as we make them. This is because progress within the self is not automatic; it requires the use of the right intentions and focus alongside stimulated capacity.

As he goes on to say, “The spiral of cultural history involves a complex interplay of various cycles and systems; of social systems, energy systems, and communication revolutions -- all co-dependent and integral,” I begin to think of Teilhard de Chardin envisioning the future as he looks at a fossil, and I begin to think of augers and gyres and the poetry of Yeats, and about the healing of old ancestral wounds. I think the more conscious the decision within any moment, the more it affects the future. I notice that Dr. Dennis’ motto on his web page is:

'Let the beauty we love be what we do'

I think he lives his life this way. I hope many people will read his book.
