give and take

Rate: 32 Flag

This is long—lots of images. There is an interesting coda at the end of the page. You're welcome to skip to that if you wish.

Also, I'm just back from my road trip mentioned in my last post make beauty. I traveled again to help a friend in Santa Fe, but doubled the miles to New Mexico in going by way of Marfa in the Big Bend Country to check on the damage done to a favorite place of mine. The story about that, and some others about the journey, will come—it will just take a bit of time to put it all together to give the story on the Prada Marfa store justice.

As a prelude to this post, and sort of an oblique hint, here are the lyrics and video to one of my favorites—and imagine this: I was a junior in high school and still cute when this came out in 1968.

It's been a long time comin'

It's goin' to be a long time gone.

Appears to be a long time,

Yes, a long, long, log time

Before the dawn.

Turn, turn any corner.

Hear, you must hear what the people say,

You know there's something that's goin' on here,

That surely, surely, surely won't stand the light of day.

And it appears to be a long,

Such a long, long, long time before the dawn.

Speak out, you got to speak out against

The madness, you got to speak your mind,

If you dare.

But don't try to get yourself elected.

If you do you had better cut your hair.

'Cause it appears to be a long time,

Before the dawn.

It's been a long time comin',

It's been a long time gone.

But you know, the darkest hour,

Is always just before the dawn.

And it appears to be a long time,

Such a long, long, long time before the dawn.

Well, for those of you that made it through this far, you might be wondering what's going on here. The first OS member that explains precisely what this post means, including defining the related ending cryptic numbers, gets to select one of the images as a gift. The image will be printed out on premium paper with archival inks and placed in an 8-ply museum white mat. Finished size will be 16" x 20" and mailed to the destination of your choice. It can be for you or sent as a gift to whomever you designate.

Send me a private message with your guess. I'll reveal the answer and the winner when that happens, or it goes to the closest guess after one week.

Some of the images here really aren't worthy of distribution, but there are a few good ones. Also, the winner is not limited to what is shown, but can select any image I've posted on OS inside any of the blogs. For example, there is a You Tube video posted above—which is worth watching, but isn't printable. However, there are nice images within that post that could be selected, such as this or this.

If you as the winner choose an image other than what's shown above, just let me know and it will be so. Shipping is on me too, and I ship international.

Update: Two posts ago, in the one titled Give and Take, I presented some cryptic numbers at the end of the post. I said that the person who figured out what they meant, or the one that came the closest would receive an image of their choice from me. It's time to reveal the winner and to explain the meaning.

The winner is our very own Trilogy. She came closest to guessing what the different numbers meant.

The post was an anniversary post for me, signifying my three years on Open Salon, or more accurately, the third anniversary of my first post as I was a member before that appeared in April of 2008.

The numbers were these:

107/168

101/168

6481

5191

334,060

And what they mean (or meant at the time of posting) is this:

107/168 168 total posts/107 Editor Picks

101/168 168 total posts/101 Cover posts

6481 The number of collective comments

5191 The number of collective thumbs*

334,060 The collective number of page views

* Not counting what we used to have in the early days—negative thumbs!

These photographs made me smile, sigh, and gasp. They made me want to look at some of those faces for days and get lost in some of the scenery. You are such an inspiration to me.~r
Wow, what a treat ! I was so engaged in enjoying each picture that I didn't take any mental notes or make connections. They are awesome - especially your mother's photo (although, I'm sure it wasn't taken by you). Viewing these is a prize on its own, but just for the fun of it, I'm going to guess that these are the photos that you used as "edit to one" among the many you shot. Thank you for a visual treat.
Rated.
welcome home, barry. i love the photos, as you know. just now as i scrolled up to rate, the whizzing by looked like a fun newsreel. i will send a pm soon. but i don't expect to win, well, i already am a winner, ain't i?
Joan, what a gracious, lovely comment. Thanks so much. What you do is equally inspiring.

Fusun, ha, yeah, that photo of my mom was taken long before my time, and the one of my father too. Most of the images are mine though. The guess is interesting, and in a sense it's true for some, but it's not the answer which will be quite complicated I fear. Thanks for your kind words too.

Diana, yes, you are a winner already in a way, but only because of your kindness. Thanks for the friendship. I hope to get some stories up soon, but it seems that responsibilities are mounting.
Oooooh! A puzzlement inside a conundrum wrapped up in a riddle...I was never very good at these, but I'll try!
It is grading week hel and I can't expain anything other than you are cool and kind and I ove the photos. Thanks for the gift.
I hope this isn't a farewell post!
Linnnn, it's ok. Thanks for coming by...by any measure it's all fluff anyway.

Dorinda, ha! Sorry for the grading hell and you're welcome.

Larry, given how your last post on that inimitable person was misinterpreted as a post about your leaving OS, I would think you wouldn't project that on anyone else...but no, I'm not leaving. I still have some things to share. :)
I want to eat the food, talk with the people, see if I can get the animals to talk to me, walk among the scenery ('specially Tulum). Your contest sounds interesting and prize very motivating. I wish myself luck and thank you kindly.
Oh, I loved this. And, now that I got to the bottom, I now get to go back again and figure out your your cryptic message and meaning. I would absolutely love to win one of your photos.
I wish I had any clue. You do gorgeous work Barry.
Eye see. I see.
This would appear to be an anniversary post.
I see many images seen before, yes some OS'ers, your handsome son (how he looks so much like his mamma), your mother and father, I believe (what comely lineage you spring from) and it is spring.

Spring cleaning of the mind, heart and soul searching, never ending, always traveling, even if just to another room in the house or on the open road (the back way....always the back way) to anywhere.

The consummate friend, father, husband lover of all things in living color.
And you are still very cute!
Your precious Popper and I love your taste in music. You opened my world to Naomi, which I listen to so often between the Bay and the Lake.
Music is the right place to find balance.
I recognize all of them but can't put a name to our fellow writers. For shame.
Must get to Texas to mingle among you; get to know who' s who.
You are a who I know and recognize and can not be fooled.
You are in every singe photo, without signature, twice seen.
Not like Alfred Hitchcock (which would be cool for you to do, except you'd need a partner to take them, which would not do.)

Solo, you. The endeavors on which you claim your solitude, yet share more of your "brain" and heart than most folk wandering in the plains, the brush behind the barn, the peeling paint from old art.

It's where you are. In all of these. You were there, full throttle senses on fire.

The patchwork of work, family and life that has surrounded you while dallying here.

A pit stop along the way of a journey without end.

We are blessed to be bystanders, waving on the side of the road of your choosing. Passing us by as you go; gracing us with your wistful eye for everything beautiful and relevant in your path.

Happy anniversary, anyway. Whether it is specific or random, it is the anniversary of something you have already done and will surely do again.
Great tune for an amazingly eclectic collection of images. I'll have to give your challenge some thought.
These photographs are amazing! I just saw the Prada one somewhere....
I will PM you with a guess...

bbd. No apologize for a long (download post) past midnight New Post with your Photography.

My Neighbor alleges I broke the computer. I posted and then Everything went bonkers.

I even did a not so good Cut & Paste. The New Post I tried went nowhere. I smiled and came home.

While this slow-downloads I'll go to`
The Speak Easy 'Gang' at a barroom.
I'll wear your Sears boxer bathrobe.
I found the Robe in a 'Y''s gym locker.
I allege it's stinky as Kerry Letterman.
I think Ya lent thee robe to the `editor.
It sure smells sorta like a barroom stool.

The comment would Not go anywhere.
The format changes. It's a red-light hoe?
There's a little box for grievances I see.

While this slow-downloads I'll visit a pub.
There's a wild-elder Place tavern for bbd.
I'l let them know your on your way - okay?

Don't bring Kerry? A rural can smell skunk!

So- I wish?

I hope a neighbor forgives me. Gadget broke.
I was typing away and the digits went so goofy.
Maybe blogs are just Kerry L.'s whoopee pews?
What happens to folk? Maybe Pope Know huh?
Kerry may dream of playing pool with Pope duh?
Beautiful pix, and it's great to see so many of them for a second (or more) time. I just pm'd you.
i'm one of those people who, upon hearing the answer to a puzzle like this, thinks "why do i never see it?" so i won't try.

i remember so many of these photos from earlier posts, and looking at them again, marveling at the resolution and the colors, the composition and *the views*, reminds me of the stories you wrote that accompanied them. thank you so much for that experience, that twiceness. and now i'm going to go back to some favorites, like popper with her paw rolling under. glad you got home safely. xo
I want the train tracks!

Or one of the roads vanishing into the distance.

Or a bird.

But I won't get one, because I haven't a clue. Not a clue. But, bwahaha, I have ALL THESE PICTURES, FOREVER right here on my computer!
Wow! Amazing photos! The recognition of some sent my brain cells whirling in long lost memories. I see Africa in your clouds! I'll take that one, since my daughter spent two years there in the Peace Corps.
Incredible post, Barry. Nice to see you back. I too am clueless..a chronic state of affairs I fear!
Barry, first of all congratulations on three years here on OS!! It's been a pleasure to know you starting back in May, 2008!

To answer your questions, I would say that the photos represent a visual synopsis all of the EPs you have received for your wonderful posts here on Open Salon!

The last number I believe relates to total page views of your posts and the other numbers were involved with your figuring number of hours spent here, plus some last minute income tax calculations from last weekend before the filing deadline on Monday!
Dazzling. And this day needed a riddle.
What a gift you are to us Barry - an absolute singular sensation. I would choose....nope, couldn't pick just one. Thank you for the gorgeous journey. I'll be pondering what the meaning of the contest!
What a fantastic ride! Gorgeous, so full of life! (how many clicked on the "still cute" link? I did! And you were, and still are :)
Wow. You are an incredible photographer. I am in such awe. I will look at this again. I just love the heron shot. OMG. R
Barry,
This should be the Open Salon photo blog of the year. Wait a minute, ...I mean decade. Thanks for sharing these tremendous shots. I was only 7 when that song come out but thank God for older brother with albums ... p.s. and I' m sure you're still "cute."
I just love your photos, Barry. I visit a lot of artists's sites and pour over lots of photos, paintings, illustrations, sculptures, etc., and while many of them are quite beautiful, very few of them can actually hold my attention long enough for me to imagine a story behind the picture, or imagine myself within the picture.
Lots of yummy eye candy here! Always enjoy seeing your work.
I'm truly a winner as it has been my pleasure and privilege to have been along for most of that photographic ride, either as an Open Salon friend or in real life. It's wonderful to see these images laid out to enjoy and remember. I'm also struck by how much I've learned from you--about food photography (artificial lighting--not really your friend here) and the magic that is tilt shift and the almost physical pleasure that proper color saturation brings. Of course, it isn't just photography that you've shared here, but your experiences and the wisdom gleaned from your wanderings.

And I can testify that you are absolutely still cute, with or without a visible chin ;)

xoxo dear friend
I've always been good at puzzles.

Well, jigsaw puzzles. These kind? Um, not so good. I am pretty sure I have the photo part figured out but the YouTube videos threw me and the cryptic numbers are still encrypted.

But it was a pleasure as always to tiptoe through your photographic garden here again, brother. I wouldn't even hazard a guess as to what is transpiring here. I am as curious as the next person to find out.

:-D
Did anyone win the contest?
Updated! See end of post!
It's a good thing I have a lot of time on my hands these days, Barry, this is going to be hard to choose. thank you!!!
